DAmnit just failed emisssions, help! Cali
Ok, just bought a new hatch,
its a 92 cx, all stock, 149xxx miles on it.
and I went to get it smogged, and yep.. it failed
now it would have passed if it werent for cali's new gnarly *** emissions dyno system.
I passed EVERYTHING except the NO at 25mph(just barely eeked thru at 15mph).
max was 798, and I got 1038(25mph)
SO if you guys have any suggestions as to what I can do I'd love to hear them.
I bought the car from a shop/dealer, so i'm going to call the guy and ask for assistance, but aside from that.. what CAN be done??
I have a few ideas.
-replace the cat, checked online cant find any used stock ones.
-get a highflow cat(I already want one of these for future mods.. are there any that are proven to give as good or better emissions than stock but still flow good?)
-whole engine swap,
there are some jdm d15b's for sale localy real cheap, I wanted one anyways, and it should have alot less miles than my cx(supposedly they come with around 50k) so maybe that'd fix the emissions problem???
i gotta do this in 7days cuz I get a free retest if I do.
thanks for any input!

hmm,
ok
good points.. where can you get that "guaranteed to pass" stuff?
can I mix that with some isopopyl also for even better results?
Basically I really want to MAKE FUKCING SURE that it'll pass cuz I'm on very low funds right now, and cant really afford to pay again.

this place called DC auto service, in milbrea,
they had an ad in craigslist for 39.95 smog, and every penny I save right now is important.. cuz I need that fukcing d15b vtec!! haha.
u know of a better place?

Re: (Tad)
basic tune up. change the o2 sensor that will help alot and like the other guys said sum alchol will work. it helps clean out all the crap in your engine and help it burn cleaner. man i had no idea that your smog tests are that strict there good lukc dude

Retarding the ignition timing a couple degrees will help lower NOx.

thanks,
ok so far I think(as previously stated) retarding ignition might help,
hopefully itll be enuf,
i'll chekc my plugs and see how they are..
might do an oil change too.
what about my air filter though?
should I go with the KN or stock?
both are in good condition.
note: my HC and CO were both WAY below the limit.. so i'm totaly fine there...
not sure exactly why the NO is so high,
might be a cx thing, cuz they start out with 12btdc timing as opposed to the 16in other deseries..
just a guess..

Re: (jazz215)
if you are looking at jdm motors .. you are most likely not gunna pass with one... i am a sate inspector in NY and i know a car wont pass emission here without an egr valve.. and Cali has stricter laws then here...and from my understanding JDM motors dont have egr valves..

ya as others said, get spark plugs, wires if the seem bad, new filter, and a new cat, FYI highflow cats aren't gona help you pass emmissions.
maybe get some of that **** that says it help you pass emmissions, and run the lowest octane you can get, that way it is easy to burn

if you have high nox, i would try running some "guarantee to pass" stuff at kragen. it removes carbon deposits, boosting compression and loweres NOX. also, make sure ur cooling system is in good shape. high combustion temps cause bad nox also

Re: (NuSiEr)
The cleaner the car runs the higher the nox.
The main causes for high nox is 1. High compresion i.e. ,high compression pistions , or even carbon build up on a stock motor can raise the compression. Try running some b-12 chem gumout intake spray cleaner in the intake manifold, just follow the directions of the can. The can is like 3 or 4 bucks. 2. Another reason for high nox is high temps. in the combustion chamber. 3. A bad e.g.r system although majority of civics i seen due not come with a egr valve. If your does not it then don't worry about. Furthermore, tune to specs and check the valve clearence. Alot of hondas fail because of this. Last but not least, a three way cat. convertor will help nox, only change if diagnosed as being the problem. moysaystor hondes reppin da Del slo and EF9 in need of a U.S ecu p3o for bar label.

Re: (moysaystor)
any pics of an egr valve so I know what to look for?
I have a 92 civic cx.
another thing, I just realized my ac might have been on when the test was running!
and I think im running low on coolant too!!
i'm going to try the intake cleaner stuff.. top off my coolant.. get some "guaranteed to pass", retard the timing... and hmmm..
should I run higher or lower octane fuel?
I GOTTA pass next time!! i dont have the cash for antoher..

Re: (Tad)
lower octane, burns at a lower temp, so you get a fuller burn. now some on was saying that NOX( or whatever) comes from you car running to clean. now if thats true you would want to run higher octane gas because you would burn less of it in the combustion camber (comparitivly speaking)

i'm thinking I should just get a new cat and then sell it or something...
if I dont pass this time i'll have to shell out another 40-100bux to redo it..
anyone know where the heck I can pick up a cat?? i'm sure honda sells em.. and i'm also sure they cost most than most rare daimonds..
