D17 Valve Cover Swap on D16Y8
Been following the D17 on d-series and some parts of honda-tech and I found out last year the the valve cover will bolt right up to our d16's without any problem. I'm in the mood for a small project to spice up my d16 so here we go. You only have to plug up the dipstick hole next to the oil cap since it's located differently on the d17's. It also yields a much larger blow-by opening than the D16 (perfect for boosting down the road). I always sorta like the plastic cover that goes over the coil wires on the valve cover that either says "Honda" or "Honda Vtec". I've been doing some research and to make my d16 stand out a bit, I'm going to attempt.
Thanks to my friend Mackie (4norzn), he handed me a d17 this past week for free so I think I'm finally gonna try this out! Here are some pics of what I'm talking about.

In order to do this, I'm gonna need the following parts:
- #6 Cover Assy. Engine Wire Harness (32120-PLR-000) *Get the PLR version if you want it to say HONDA VTEC*
- #8 Holder Assy. B, Engine Harness (32128-PLC-000)
I'm also wanting to see if I can track down the coil packs and possibly take them apart to fit my D16 spark plug wires under them. This will give a clean look and disguised look. Why not just convert to Coil packs and call it a day you ask? Nah, not interested. I'm a cheap bastard.

Yes, I'm wanting to use the D17A2 wire cover which say Vtec on it. It's different and I honestly haven't seen it on another civic unless they've done a D17 engine swap. It's nothing big, just a small little project I'm working on for the community.

I have one in my civic... The plastic will always get to looking crappy so you need to keep it treated to look nice. I'd much rather just have to deal with keeping the valve cover clean.
Any updates?

D17 Valve Cover fit perfectly just as expected and I'm loving the chrome cover stud covers that the 7th gen civics have. No oil leaks, nada. Only thing I need to do was plug up the dipstick hole with is right beside the oil fill cap. D17's have their dipstick going through the valve cover versus any other d16 where it's off the side of the block.
Gonna stop by lowes after work and get a bigger hose to run the blowby opening to the air intake.

by moving over to the coil on plug setup you don't have to worry about the wear parts that any distributor system would have. Which is the rotor and cap. Also by having the coil on plug application you're able to have a good constant spark. This setup beats the stock system, by not having moving parts which is always good. But it's a little pricey.

You would need to step up to a motec/ AEM EMS. Which are far from cheap.
Gains, sure. Worth in your case. Not likely.
There's noithing wrong the stock setup.

I think the carhacker setup uses the factory ECU. Unlike the AEM COIL setup which needs the AEM ecu. I could be wrong but i think the Carhackers Coil setup is for the factory unit.

also if you were to convert over to this system, your engine should be putting out some major power. other than that it's not logical

That's not the setup I was talking about.
The setup my friend runs on his car is completely different, and cost a lot.
If the price is right, and it does do everything they say it does, it could possibly be a worth while upgrade.

I still don't know, not looking for any gains in the my ignition strength. Stock unit will suffice for now but I'll always consider. The cost is the number one thing that is holding me back from doing such a thing.

Got the parts in yesterday and because it was raining, I was unable to get good pics but I was able to fit it and it looks so different. Hood Clearance is like a few centimeters but no rubbing so far. Love it! I revised the top of the page as only 2 pieces are needed if anyone is interested. I'll post pics up later if the sun decides to pop out.

looks good and different... what about painting the metal valve cover underneath and having that black plastic over it?

No they do look better, but anymore that's all you see under everyone else's hood! This is just to be different for the sake of things.

I'm very much wanting to pull the VHT wrinkle red off the shelf this weekend and give it a nice paint job and keeping the cover on there black. I've only seen one other A2 painted this way and it looked good.

Re: D17 Valve Cover Swap on D16Y8
What are the specs on that 7th gen? Its got a different brake fluid reservoir, resonator, and air filter box than usdm 7th gens. The freon port is in a different location as well. Did that valve cover come wrinkle red stock?
