On a stock D16Z6, it's 4800 RPM. I've made a DIY VTEC indicator light, and everytime it never fails to light up at 4800 RPM.

istead of a pop it just gets louder. what you should do if u really want to hear is it just take off your muffler. run open axle back, you should be definately be able to here it then

sohc's dont have vtec on the exhaust side so taking off the muffler wont make a damn bit of difference. the sound is all in the intake, especially if you have a cam.

this is true, but at normal operating temp and at wot vtec engages at 4800-4900 on a d16z6.

Engine temp and vehicle speed (I think it's 135 deg F and 19 MPH) determine whether or not VTEC will engage, but have no effect on what RPM it will engage at. Engagment RPM is programmed into the ECU.
D16z6 on stock P28 = 4800 RPM VTEC engagment.
EDIT: I think adequate oil pressure may be needed too. ...Not sure, my FSM is out in the car.

Re: D16Z6 vtec engagement? Which rpm? (Cee_mon)
VTEC doesn't engage at the same RPM everytime. Its all on oil pressure, speed, and sometimes temperature (cause your VTEC wont hit when its ice cold). That is why everyone is posting different times when there VTEC engages.

The D16Z6 engages VTEC at 4800 RPM.
NOTE to those of you posting 5000+ RPM numbers: The D16Z6 and D16Y8 DO NOT have the same VTEC engagement points!!!
