d16z6 vs. b18b
alright heres the deal. i currently have a d16z6 swapped into my cx hatch and i am pretty happy with it. i get 34-36mpg, its punchy and if anything breaks itll be fairly cheap. it also has 100k miles on it.
however i may be in a position to get a great deal on a b18b with 140k miles on it. i know its roughly 20 more hp and 20 more torque. similar gear ratios, but weighs about 110lbs more and should get 30-32ish mpg.
i am really having trouble deciding whether i would make the swap or not. the car is daily driven and will stay daily driven for a while so i never plan on doing any major engine work, maybe a couple boltons as years go by. also keep in mind i am a very poor college student so losing a few mpg does carry a decent amount of weight, figuratively speaking.
so is it really worth doing the swap? should i trade my lightweight vtec motor for a beefy nonvtec dohc? ......
please no 'decide for yourself' or 'search' posts. the reason im posting is because i cant decide and also shows that i have been searching and still cant come to a clear conclusion.

Re: d16z6 vs. b18b (bleh)
how cheap is the b18b? if its very cheap, i would go with the b18b since its gonna be a daily driven car, but if u planning to go faster and u dont have the cash to build a b series, keep the z6 and homemade turbo.

keep the z6 and save the money to do the swap and everything for a turbo. plus its cheap to fix and find parts and you are a student, wouldnt it be cool a nice turbo on the ****.

If you're wicked poor then consider the price of b18b/mounts/axles = groceries.
If you do indeed have some cash to toss around then boost the z6...less miles on it and you already own it.

keep the z6.. its fast enough for you anyways, and if your poor, why go through teh headache and $ to swap a b series? gas is more, and its not much faster. a friend of minres had a Z6 hatch and another had a b18b in a hatch. they both mathced up until the B series hit 3rd gear.. not much faster.

Re: (sinister6)
seeing that i own both motors right now, keep the z6, get a cam and enjoy the good mpg
after i did my b18b swap, it wasnt much faster than ex's that had some work done. the only reason i'm rocking a b18b in my coupe now is because of the 8 psi running through it

o.k. I don't have either and I have a 92 4-door and am trying to devide which one to swap into my civic. It's an automatic and it will be my daily driver...I am also fairly poor but I want to get the best engine for my money and the one that will give me the least amount of problems.

If you're talking DOHC than yea, but I'd take a LS over a Z6 anyday.

I've seen a lot of sohc vtecs stomp all over cars with motors much greater than yours. This isn't a dick swinging contest and that isn't what he's looking for.
IMO, stick with the single cam. You already get the great gas you need. Costs are kept low. A lot can be done with the sohcs if you ever decide to upgrade in the future. It is ideal for your lifestyle and can still be really quick if you want it to be. Save the money, stick with the sohc.

Re: (Revolver)
I've had them both in my hatch.
I loved the d, but as soon as I swapped in the LS, I knew I had made the right decision.
The LS is a more user friendly motor for a daily beater (IMO). The extra tq. down low made stop-light to stop-light driving more fun. I no-longer had to wrap it out to make it up steep-hills. I no-longer need to down-shift to pass someone on the highway. And i actually get better mpg w/ the LS b/c I dont have to take it to vtec to make it move, I can quick-shift all day long, and never take it above 3 or 4 grand.
Also, when I purchased my swap I was a poor-college kid too... just eat ramen-noodles for a couple months
What ever you decide, good luck to you.
and for the record, my LS makes short-work of most of the sohcs I run into.

LOL. Just as long as you know that not everyone with sohcs are ricers that don't know what they're doing.

i have somewhat the same dilema. Stick with the d16z6 that came in my 94 si or save for a b18b in bout a year. I think $$$ wise, unless i can find a dirt cheap b18b swap (maybe $1000 or less), im gonna stick w/ the d16. Like most have said, it seems to more cost efficient. The parts are less expensive and maybe a little easier to find. I myself am also a poor college student trying to fix my car up on a very small budget.

Not at all. Some of these sohc-guys are pretty hard-core, I respect that.
You dont need two cams to be cool (or fast, for that matter). Actually, now that I have a good job, my next project will be a NA F sereis sohc. I cant wait.

I've wanted to do an F series sohc for a long time. GL with that.
