the y8 tranny has a longer second gear so it gets better gas mileage on the freeway. the z6 is a lot more fun to drive.

What the hell does that mean? A longer second gear gives better gas mileage on the freeway? Enlighten me, please. Why is the Z6 tranny more fun to drive? The difference between the second gear ratios is 1.909 and 1.900 if you ask me I doubt you'd hardly notice it.

Re: d16z6 tranny vs. y8 (no-tec)

D16Z6 D16Y8
1st 3.250 3.250
2nd 1.900 1.909
3rd 1.250 1.250
4th 0.909 0.909
5th 0.702 0.702
Final 4.250 4.250

Y8 tranny is better, IMO. Steel shifter forks.

Mike_C 05-07-2003 04:34 PM

longer 2nd gear for better mileage on highway? dunno but you, but i don't use 2nd much on the freeway https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

Not as easy as the aluminum shift forks in the pre 96 trannies.

take one apart and check out the webbing on the forks... havent had to re-build any trannies for bent forks in pre 96 cars but have re-built numurous 96+ trannies w/2nd and 5th gear forks bent...

I would like to hear more from you, sounds interesting and like you have experience with both. What is it about the 96+ forks that you say makes them twist easier, despite being made of concievably stronger material?

I would know the difference because I have driven both, and there is no noticable difference in gear ratios, that would be because there really isn't any difference. The only difference is second gear on a Y8 is 1.909 vs 1.900 on a Z6. I'm only asking that you back up your comment that the Z6 is more fun to drive. I want to know why.

i dont know maybe it was just the diff in the two cars. one was a hatch and the other was mine. i like the z6 more, i dont know why; i just think its more fun to drive. maybe because i have one.

Re: d16z6 tranny vs. y8 (JasonBlackEJ1)

Don't have any hard feelings man, I ask because, I want to hear facts not opinions. I hear to many people say "this is better than this," or "that's no good it has to be this way," and I never hear any reasons why, specs, facts, tests, whatever. It gets real confusing people going back and forth with their opinions.

Mike_C 05-07-2003 07:53 PM

i sell bikes during the summer and it's very well known in the bike industry that a steel bike will ride softer (because it flexes a little)than an aluminum.

This is why aluminum breaks though, it is more brittle, no give. So which is more likely to occur, bending or breaking. I have heard of many shifter forks in the S20 tranny being broken, I have never heard of an S40 shifter fork bending however. Let's here some more info on this.

Could it be a tire size difference? I bet it could be.

I think RyanCivic2000 spends a little too much time on the dseries.org board....

Thanks Eee Pee.

Mista Bone mentions on here how weak the S20 shifter forks are, but no information on the S40.
