D16Z6 swap - What do I need before it goes in?
Well, looks like I'm going to be picking up a D16Z6.
My question is, If I put a D16Z6 w/5spd (with around 100K miles) in place of my D15B7, what all should I do to it before the install? I'm definitely going to do a new timing belt and water pump for sure. Anything else I need to do as preventive maintenance? Just want to me able to drop this thing in and have a good motor that's ready to go for many miles to come. I've always been the type I rather do it right the first time than to have to do it again later.

I have the instructions on how to wire it but rather find a deal on a ex/si harness if I can find one, just for the factory install look. If anyone has a deal on one, let me know. Thanks

check junkyards, you live near Houston so you should be able to find a wrecked 4 door ex no problem you just gotta keep your eyes peeled. any 92-95 EX or Si trim wiring harness will work, but the problem with buying one though is that they are gonna be pretty high, but if you arent on a budget and would rather shell out some cash instead of doing it yourself for free go ahead haha

good point on the budget. Just thought maybe if somebody had a cheapo I could find I would grab it. If I cant find a cheap one, I'll just wire it up, no biggie. Thanks for your help.

if you want vtech youre gonna need the p28 ecu and the wiring harness for it, i just swapped the head of a z6 it was a pain in the *** and it still wont run good ha i must have mixed stuff up but youd need the dizzy wires and plugs too. maybe a new tensioner for your timing belt. new gaskets would be good too, like valve cover gasket intake manifold gasket exhaust manifold gasket, idk thats what i did, but who knows mine still doesnt run good :/

well I'm buying a complete motor. Its in the car running, doesn't smoke, or burn any oil. I don't plant on going through the motor right now. I will definitely do and fresh timing belt (and tensioner) and water pump. Will probably go ahead do a full tune up too. Might do a fresh clutch too if the price isn't too bad.

Do I need to stick with OEM Honda parts for the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump? I don't mind paying the extra $$$ if OEM parts are better, but if there are cheaper ones that are just as good or better, let me know. Thanks

Aftermarket water pumps are absolute crap. For the timing belt you can buy a Gates belt (they make Honda's OEM timing belts) the tensioner probably wont make a whole lot of difference as long as the bearing is made by a reputable company.

Autozone sells a whole timing belt kit, its a Goodyear Gatorback kit and its the belt and tensioner pulley. i have yet to run into any problems with one @ even 11k-rpms on a boosted engine. while your there always replace cam seal and crankshaft seal, it costs no more than 8buks each and is better now than later and have a oiled up timing belt.
If you can go ahead and also replace the rear main seal before you drop it all in. aside that, plugs, wires and such as others have stated.
I've also haven't had any issues at all with autozone new waterpumps with lifetime warranty and is really a couple of bucks cheaper than OEM.
