D16Z6 recommended oil?
I just purchased a 1993 civic EX, with 150,000 miles on the motor
I don't know when the oil was last changed so i am changeing it this week, and was wondering if you guys have any specific type i should get for it? i live in the midwest and its summer so whatever goes with those climate conditions.

Re: D16Z6 recommended oil? (dogbiscuit)
Seeing as how it has 150K on it, I'd stick with a high mileage oil.
My 94 EX has 230K on it and I use Mobil 1 High Mileage oil, 5W-30.

You should get Mobile One Synthetic 15w-30. This oil at 5w-30 is so thin due to its characteristics. My instructor worked for mobile and he says that with any engine if you want to run Mobile one you should go with 15w-50 if you have used 5w-30.

here is this great idea... it doesnt matter what brand oil you use and you just change it every 3k stop asking such dumb questions... using one type of oil over another isnt going to make or break your damn motor

15W-50? That's just wrong. 5W-30 is what it should be using and on almost all the D16Z6's (including mine) it say's that on the oil cap. For colder climates you can use 10W but I have yet to use it except for 3 years ago when it was -15 during the winter. I don't think synthetic is really the right move for a high mileage engine. My friend is running mobile ! fully synthetic and he burns oil like it's free . His seals have gone to total **** and the synthetic is just too thin to not go past his old seals. I am trying to get him to go to regular 5W-30, but he is an idiot.

open the owners manual and use the 5w30 that it says..if it doesn't say "switch to 10/15 blah blah blah" then don't. im pretty sure the guys at Honda thought of their engines getting past 150k.
personally, i would use mobil, cause its a great synthetic, but keep the 5w30
or like said above, if you cant afford the mobil, use a high mileage oil such as quaker state or castrol, etc... with 5w30

315,000 miles on a d15 here, nothing but Valvoline 5w-30/10w30 has been in there since day 1

Honda changed their recommendation a few years ago. "96" and newer Civics should use 5w20 now.

Re: (vg7z)
On my D16Z6 with 256,500 miles I use nothing but Valvoline Maxlife 10w30. It's thicker, it keeps her from leaking, and it lasts an easy 3000 miles between changes. Yeah, 5w30 is recommended, but 10w30 will be better for the age of the engine.
And, as an oil change professional, I wouldn't put 5w20 motor oil in my enemy's vehicle. Honda runs it for fuel economy (as does Ford) because it saves you about 3% over the course of the car's life, but you see that cost come back in a big way in parts wear. ****'s like water, we hate selling it. We run 10w30 synthetic in the turbo RSX-S and she runs like a friggin top.
