93.5-95 I believe came with the valve cover that said vtec on it. others did not.

The motor is not rare. it is equivalent to the d16y8 in the obd2 world , the z6 is obd1 . ( people say a better motor over the y8 due to the oilsysmtem )

D16Z6 is far from rare, but a all around good engine. are you sure this didn't have a engine swap in it life?

The part about the years is correct. I made a thread about this a few years back and got lots of feedback.

z6 block with Y8 head is actually not a great setup. The Z6 head flows better and is better for FI. The Y8 has a rectangular combustion chamber, which is good for all motor, although the Z6 pistons are a bit dished, so the compression difference isnt much, basically not giving you any power. The Y8 intake manifold is what really makes the difference because it is the best flowing D series intake manifold.

95Sol99civic: no all the D16Y* Engines have the same oiling system. Its only 1 oiling port per bearing instead of the 2 on the rest of the D series motors.

I know my SI del Sol's trans is way different gearing than any EX or SI trans. It has alot of take off but the only thing is it gets alittle crappy gas mileage on the highway. If I stay between 55-60 then I get 40ish on the highway around 35 mpg.

After your post I decided to check out the differences between the manual transmissions for the '95 del Sol Si, '95 Civic EX coupe, '95 Civic Si hatch and '95 Civic EX sedan.

The only different parts I found between the four were:

CLIP B, HARNESS BAND (DARK BROWN)
- 91507-P01-003
- del Sol Si
- (NOT ON CIVIC EX COUPE, CIVIC SI HATCH OR CIVIC EX SEDAN)

GEAR, MAINSHAFT FIFTH
- 23581-P20-A00
- del Sol Si
- (NOT ON CIVIC EX COUPE, CIVIC SI HATCH OR CIVIC EX SEDAN)

GEAR, MAINSHAFT FIFTH
- 23581-P20-C00
- Civic EX coupe
- Civic Si hatch
- Civic EX sedan
- (NOT ON DEL SOL SI)

GEAR, COUNTERSHAFT FIFTH
- 23461-P20-A00
- del Sol Si
- (NOT ON CIVIC EX COUPE, CIVIC SI HATCH OR CIVIC EX SEDAN)

GEAR, COUNTERSHAFT FIFTH
- 23461-P20-C00
- Civic EX coupe
- Civic Si hatch
- Civic EX sedan
- (NOT ON DEL SOL SI)

So the only real performance difference between the transmissions would be the fifth gear.

Interestingly enough it also appears (at least) the '93-'95 del Sol S and Si share the same transmissions.

Are you sure you have the stock transmission? Perhaps you need a tune up.

But I don't understand what you're saying here. I can't tell if you're saying you get "40ish" mpg or "35 mpg".

I just checked FuelEconomy.gov and it says the 1995 del Sol Si with a manual transmission should get about 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

depends where in the world you are... z6 and y8 are very rare here in South Africa. we have to import the heads. but its well worth the effort

I just compared the part numbers right above you. At least for 1995 the EX and Si had the same exact part numbers for all the gears. The S/Si del Sol ('93-'95 at least) had the same gearing except the fifth gear uses a different part number, meaning it might have a different ratio.

This thread, contrary to what the thread title might lead you to believe, is NOT about how rare the D16Z6 is or is not. It's about a part on the D16Z6 and how common it might be. It's been answered already too.

I get around 40 mpg if i stay around 55-60mph and on highway speeds 70-80mph I get around 35mpg. Sorry I didn't make that clear. But I think that the big difference may be the final drive. I had an S model also and it was very pepy for a 1.5 so that kinda expains alot thanx for the info guys.
