Default D16Z6 questions

I'm kind of new to the forums but I have a few questions right now. I bought a 1992 Civic VX about two months ago and I'm looking to swap the D15Z1 with a D16Z6.

My questions are:

1. Can I put the Z1 head on the Z6 block and gain the VTEC-E my VX currently has but still get some of that additional power in the higher revs?

2. How hard would the swap be since they are the same motor family.

3. How could I change my VX over to power steering, because I really would like it. I have an 88 DX Hatch without it but when I got this I really wanted power steering.

4. Has anyone ever built up a D15Z1? I'm not looking to be 200+ hp if I built it up, just maybe 130-150. I know that I'd have to get a bigger intake manifold, I was surprised to see how small the intake was when I got it.

I dont really know a lot about the d15, but if I were you I would just do a solid D16z6 swap, it would be easy and I think you would be happy with it. I have a d16 in my 93 EX coup and I love that little thing. As far as getting 200hp from it, its gunna take a little bit of $$. Youd have to build up your internals and get a turbo. Getting 130 to 140 is more realistic with stayin N/A. I have intake headers and full exhuast and I think im pushin around 135 with it, maybe.

Dont know if this help to much, but I tryed.

The VX motor was built for fuel effeciency, over power. A z6 swap would be pretty simple, seeing as you can use your D-series axels, mounts, shiftlinkage, that is on your car already. It would give you a decent power gain, but still nothing to great, even with bolt ons.

But IMO I would rather have a Vx hatch getting 45+mpg, than a mid 15 second car..

1. Why do you want VTEC-E over VTEC??? VTEC-E was made for good fuel economy.. the z6 head is a thumbs up!

2. Not hard at all, all your really doing is taking the motor out and replacing it.. Just take many pics so you will remember what goes where, the swap should practically be the same

3. rip it out FTW. really makes no diffrence.. especially in your light *** car.. i have a coupe i ripped the PS out

4. N/A SOHC's are a waste. TURBO!

I want the Z1 head on there so i can gain the VTEC-E economy but still gain more power with room to build.

Go search in the 1992-2000 Civic / Del Sol forum. At the very top it has a FAQ about swaps. Also look up mini me swap.

If the Vtec E Is what you really want, which I do understand 45 or so mpg is great. I'm sure you can simply get a D16 short block and put your D15 head on it very easly. You can still use your stock wiring harness and mounts. I'm not a wiz on head swaps, but I'm not sure how the smaller displacemt head will work on the 1.6 head, But I know it will bolt right on.

go straight z6, z6 manifold, z6 trans and all.

you wont get 200+ whp on d15 rods

Leave your vx motor in there, save some $ and look for a b-series swap, if you shop around you can find one for relatively cheap, I got a 94 ls full swap, including wireing harness, ecu, motor, trans, shafts, and shift linkage for $400. Then you'll have a decently quick car with a huge amount of potential (ls-vtec, turbo, etc.)

If you throw another single slammer in there you'll be kickin yourself in the @ss when you get tired of it, or dump 2X the $ in it to make it as fast as a stock ls.

I still get 35-37 mpg in my ej with a boosted b18 in it, so you may give up a little, but 35 ain't bad for a 12 sec car.

Just my 2 cents

i would at least say put the y8 manifold on it if you are going to dick with anything

Using a d15Z1 head on a D16Z6 is not advisable. For one thing, the intake ports are quite small. They were really not made for high airflow, and are going to be a SEVERE liability when it comes to making any kind of HP. And simply slapping on a bigger intake manifold is probably only going to make things worse, as the resulting step in size at the head will hurt more than it will help. Another thing to consider is compression. The D15Z1 has VERY small combustion chambers, and will give you MUCH higher compression on a D16Z6 block than the 9.3:1 that it given on the D15Z1 block. Although compression increases fuel economy, you probably won't be able to use 87 octane fuel anymore, which could possibly cause you to end up spending more on gas.

As for building a D15Z1, as I said before, the head doesn't flow worth crap. You WON'T be able to make power with a D15Z1 head. Now if you throw in some higher compression pistons and slap on a Z6 head, you will probably have one of the best SOHC motors out there (given the good rod ratio of the D15Z1 compared to other D-series). But ultimately, you are going to run into the same barriers as far as making any kind of REAL allmotor power that you would with any other D-series motor. 130-150WHP without a turbo is going to be a challenge.

My advice? If you want power, go for a B-series swap. Otherwise, be glad that you are getting 40+MPG in these times of $3+ a gallon gas.

the y8 manifold aint the "type R" of d series. the best thing he could do is port match the z6 and be done with it.

p29's has a 7.2cc dome
y8 head is 1.8cc smaller than the z6 because of the "squish" plates
see where im goin with your cr?

get a good cr, a nice PNP, and call bisi from there about cams.
