LS with a Vtec head....also known as LS/Vtec....this will have a little more potential NA than a sohc z6...however the Z6 is also a very good engine, and has a lot of potential, the lsvtec would have the advantage with the TQ..and gained HP from the vtec head...

if you got the money ls vtec or boost or both

but d16 you can build it up & boost. And if you blow it, get another one.
D16's are cheap and got potential.

I'm a D series nut and probably will never go DOHC. I have too much fun with my D16Z6....

....but the B18B is the only DOHC I'd get. I wouldn't even waste my time with the LS/VTEC.

Later on make it a LS/Turbo. Run up to 10psi safely, on stock parts.

Z6, for the money of just the LS swap, you could build one hell of a SOHC

LS, no doubt. theyre CHEAP!
of course I'd require these parts too-
ITR tranny with LSD and ATS 4.9 final drive
superlight flywheel
balanced bottom end, beefy rods and CTR pistons
BIG LS all motor cams
upgraded fuel pump/injectors/regulator
tuning and some more tuning

my ls with jdm itr tranny ran 9.4 in the eighth. Not too shabby. Better than a b16a eg.

i think you have to analyze the long term goals:

d16 - I actually have a turboed one...was fun...but you are ultimately limited in the power you can make

b18 - true, u can turbo a d16 for cheaper, however, if you have the money...or plan on having it in the future...i would swap. Then, turbo the b18 after that. Remember, if you do everything that you did to a d16 to a b18, ultimately the b18 will be better off. Your are starting at a higher base.

D16 doesn't limit you that much on the power you can make. With a D16 Turbo it is relatively cheap to build a motor for 300-400whp. I built my D16Y8 shortblock for $1500 to make about 300-350whp once I go turbo. Hoping for around 230whp on nitrous for now. So ireally there is more potential available for cheaper with a D series than a LS swap. For the price of an LS swap I built my shortblock to be able to hold more boost than any stock LS bottom end will take.

If an LS block was meant to have a VTEC head, Honda would have put one on it! Go with the little SOHC D16, more hp for less $.

get the SOHC VTEC...

and rebuild the motor with high proformance parts.

and you will run 15s flat.

turbo it up a little and you will run mid 14s

Not much of a difference IMO. You'll be slow either way...

Such a negative attitude. Why would he be slow either way?

He's probably just trying to get a rise out of everyone. Sorry to thread jack, but hey ryan, I know you are a big advocate of the SOHC and I have a question. I have the y7 in my hatch now (stock) and am wanting to possibly boost or go nitrous in the future. Should I keep the motor I have now and build it a bit, or swap in the ls? Just wondering what your thoughts are on the y7. Thanks for any advice.

The question posed was which would you build ALLMOTOR.

have had both, got ls swap for like 1500 total, insane amount of diffence in torque when stock v stock, it feels so good to pound it in the low rpms. about the same highend with my old z6

me too actually i got my z6 chillin in my back yard i didn't think there was gonna be a huge difference between the two but i love the torque of my ls. i say go with the ls. o and people are talking about z6 being cheap the ls is not that much more then a z6.
