d16z6 head onto a d16y7/d16y5/d16y8 block OR d16y8 head on a d15b7/d16z6 block HEAD BOLTS EXPLAINED
I've been seeing a lot of threads with this question, so I figured I'd give a good answer in a thread with a thread topic that you can search for.
all sohc d-series from 88-95 have longer head bolts than the 96-00 d-series.
on all the 88-95 d-series, the bolt that goes nearest to the solenoid (rear passenger side corner) the mating surface on the cylinder head is raised, so that it makes up for the difference in thread depth on the 88-95 blocks. My only guess is because of the water passage is in the way of where the headbolt would be.
Like I said earlier, because of where the headbolt meets the cylinder head on the 88-95 heads is raised, we are completely oblivious to it.
I don't care what any of the threads have stated, or what your cousin's second uncle has stated. This is the correct information:

When using a 88-95 head and a 96-00 block, you need 9 96-00 bolts, and ONE 88-95 bolt for where the vtec solenoid is/would be.
As you can see, when people say to use the bolts for whatever head, that doesn't always apply. And to use the bolts for whatever block, that doesn't always apply.

so when im using arp studs i have to buy another set for the z6 and only use 1 stud?
y8 block gonna use a z6 head soon.

call arp directly and ask them, they should let you order a single stud.

didnt search when doing my newest mini me.. D15B7 with D16Y8 head and 2 layer headgasket.. i fought and fought.. i thot it could have been water.. anyways.. still had the headbolts from the Y8 head so i just tossed that one in and didnt torque it too much thinking i could have stripped something.. ill go torque that now that i know its ok

Z6 studs with one custom stud (Part number found on D-Series.org) on my Z6 block Y8 head. The Y8 studs everyone told me to get were NOT RIGHT.
BTW, I have one extra Z6 stud if anyone wants.

He's telling the truth. I recently tried to mate a D16z6 head to a Y7 block and all the studs were to long except 1 (using D16z6 ARp's). I can take pics and post them after X-mas.

My question is if ALL 88-95 bolts and ALL 96-00 bolts are the same as one another. Meaning that I could use the D16Z6 studs for the 9x 92-95 bolts that I need on my D15B7.

The more i think about what was writen in this post, the more i want to convert my d15b7 head to a vtec head instead of rebuilding a LS motor and rebuilding everything else that comes with it and swapping that into my del Sol. If anybody thinks i should keep the d15b7 motor and swap the head, let me know, because i don't know what to do anymore. I don't have the money to rebuild a motor right now.

I'm not saying that one Z6 head stud wont work with the Y8 head/Z6 block combo, but it's not the right head stud. You're risking a blown gasket, just like you would be if you reused the stock hardware. If you're going to go out of your way to order one stud, at least get the right one.

Turns out ARP has a headstud kit made specially for y8 heads on z6 blocks, so in other words that would work on an a6 as well according to the information posted here. Just a heads up so you guys don't have to order a single stud anymore.

I just recently had a D16Y5 motor in my 99 hatchback, my D16y7 bit the dust. I was wondering if a D16Y8 SOHC VTEC head will fit on a D16Y5 block.
