D16z6 on D15b7 Bottom - VERY odd vtec engagement sound and bogging
Here's what I have -
D16z6 Head with stock internals with z6 distributor and JG Cam Gear
D15b7 Stock bottom end. P06 ecu, stock wiring with a Vafc-II
*running 91 octane*
I just blew a head gasket on my mini-me setup that was running great. I had burnt coolant for awhile while I was trying to confirm blown head gasket (radiator was bad too). I took off the head and while I had it off I milled it .040, did a valve job, seats, seals etc. I put it all back together and there are several things:
1: When vtec tries to engage now it makes a "spinning sound" it is mechanical and does not sound good at alllll. It almost sounds like a clutch on a DeWalt cordless drill when it's set low. We used lube when re-assembling everything and the motor started right up...only makes this sound when engaging vtec. Valve lash is right .007 on intake .009 on exhaust. I'll be checking the lost motion devices soon (do they have to be primed or something?), but any other help is appreciated.
2: I disconnected my solenoid so it wouldn't try to engage but the motor is still really boggy. The timing is correct - we currently have it set to the best it has run at all since doing the install but still runs shitty. I am told that if you burn coolant too long that it can ruin your O2 sensors and make your ecu think something is wrong. Can anyone confirm this before I spend $120+ on O2 sensors?
Thanks in Advance for any help you may be able to provide.

No, but that's why I have the v-afcII. It was running fine before the head gasket blew...all of this stuff is happening just since putting it back together.

Uhmmmm No. lol
but the plug was taken out of the top of the b7 block. As stated before...everything was fine until head gasket gave (6-7 months) and I'm sure it only blew due to not doing a re-torque. Which of course is my fault.

you dont have to on a mini-me setup...
is your car tuned on a dyno or did you dial in some numbers and thought it felt right?

Re: (TurboB16aEG)
No, not dyno tuned. It was running good before...pulled it off, did work, put it back on and it started acting a fool. I've got access to a wideband..I need to see if there's a fuel issue. I guess I should've stated that is was all port-matched while it was off too, (by a very knowledgeable head porter).
Any ideas?

Re: (NOv8IV)
When you add fuel with a vafc you pull timing and viceversa.. Write your vafc settings down and set it flat..then set your ignition timming. If you set it after you reinstalled the head with the vafc settings inaffect it could throw the whole thing off...

Re: (TurboB16aEG)
Yes, the vafc is all the same as it was before any work was done to the head...good point. I'll reset it and go from there. However, the vtec engagement sound is still another big concern.

Re: (Xscort)
compression is good across the board. we've done a leakdown test too..3% leak on cylinder 2. Everything else was 2% or less. Pretty tight by my standards.

Re: (NOv8IV)
I still think once you set the vafc flat and reset your ignition timing it will cure all your problems...If your timing is messed up when you hit vtec now it can cause it to bog like your describing. Leakdown looks good BTW

Re: (TurboB16aEG)
Well I'm actually not even engaging vtec now...it just bogs regardless. I'lll set v-afc flat and cam gear to 0 and reset ignition timing and work my way forward. Your help is greatly appreciated BTW.

Re: (TurboB16aEG)
Oooookay. Got the car running right yesterday and it solved both problems. TurboB16aEG was right. I actually unplugged the VAFCII and it immediately started running rich as hell, plus I was retarded one tooth. I plugged vafc back in, zero'd it and it started running lean again, so I started messing with the fuel correction and it cleaned up considerably. Vtec engages fine...I am guessing that it was running so lean that it was just clattering like a SOB on the high cam?? I still have to get the wideband on it and play a bit, just want it to run as good as it can considering I know it won't ever be fast N/A. Thanks for the help!!

x2!!!! I drive this car about 20 miles a week...I have a company vehicle and when I'm off work the family and I are in my wife's 07 fit. Unfortunately the hatch has been pushed to the side. Once we close on our new house the hatch will stop being the step-child....after I get my bike at least
