It depends on a couple of things.
1)how fast you want it to be...whether its going to be your daily driver just for racing at lights, or at the track.
2)how much you want to spend...you can get a greddy turbo kit for a little cheaper than a 2nd gen b16 swap, or build go with i/h/e and nitrous, and some internal work (cams, pistons, rods, etc). The sohc vtecs definitely have potential, and youll probably save a little cash building it up n/a compared to a swap.

If you want to own, get a turbo for the d16.
Greddy makes a decent kit for a fair price, if you want to go hardcore go DRAG, but look to spend like $3k.

Yeah from what I've heard, the greddy turbo kits for sohc civics give a good boost in power, and still leave the car able as a daily driver for the street. They don't take very long to spool up, but an intercooler and blow-off valve should be purchased too for the best performance.

Theres always supercharging the engine too...check out this article:

Hope this helps.

Don't go turbo...I haven;t seen too many quick SOHC turbo cars-I know there are though. I ran a 98 EX at the track one time...
HIM-98 EX, Greddy turbo kit, 15 lbs boost, suspension, Azenis tires, full interior
ME-94 Civic Si, p/p head, milled .020, intake/exhaust, suspension, crappy Nittos
We were even through first gear, and second and third he started pulling. He beat me only by about 2 coupe lengths in the quarter. Which is good that he beat me, but I expected more.
If you go turbo, deffinately build your engine so you can achieve peak performance and longevity. But, many things are possible with the d16z6. You can swap in d16a1(ZC) pistons which will bump you up .5 compression points, milling your head and getting maximum flow, cause that's what it needs. Port and polishing is good, Skunk 2 and ZEX make good cams and valve springs/retainers, use a d16y8 intake manifold, which has short wide runners, and any b series throttle body will bolt right up, but use an OBD1 so no wiring will be messed up. Also, the tranny in your car sucks. Get a ZC tranny, and with an Si final drive, it's the shortest gear ratio you can possibly get for the SOHC with factory parts. Good CAI, header and 2 1/4" exhaust, and a gutted interior, you should be good. There are many options for the SOHC. and doing all what I listed, will be cheaper than a swap, you'll have a new(prety much OEM) engine, and you'll take out DOHC's with the same car-going ALL MOTOR. Check out Spade's post about this tooo...just search for threads created by him.

I've seen a quite a few GReddy turbo'ed D16Z6s on the Net that claim to do mid-high 14s. I don't think that that's bad at all.

Plus the GReddy kit can be had for sooo cheap.

Spend about $2500 ($1500 kit, $1000 misc.), do it right, and you'll eat DOHC VTECs all day long.

yeah, 15 psi with stock internals. I think it's the Garret td05 16g or something?? It's a pretty small turbo, spools up quick, but thats about it. my friend has a t3/t4 turbo, and at 7 pounds, sounds like an angry army of turbos when it's boostin!!!

at 15 psi on stock intenals(which I don't believe) that civic should be AT LEAST in the mid 13's...Dave, VTC_slow_Civic,...ran a 14.1 or 14.2 at 12 psi on steet tires...so i pretty much think your full of ****.
