Re: D16y8 or z6???????? (HXvtec)
i didnt mean bhp i just meant hp all around.? c i have the stock d16y8 in my car now but its in bad shape and has 225,000 on it. i heard that with the z6's you can get about 400hp out of it after you boost (i dont know how much) and get a real good tune on it . but i mean i would be rebuilding it with new everything pretty much.

You're definitely going to have to research a lot if you plan on reaching 400whp, as well as doing a complete buildup of either of those motors.
I would definitely go with the z6. Im in the process of building a z6 from the bottom - up for 400whp...actually, im almost done

Get the z6.
I would personally get Eagle H-beams and Vitara Pistons. Get a cam and Valve springs and a Intake manifold and really good tuning and all the fuel goodies and 400whp isnt out of the question.

The y8 can be harder to tune due to the timing of the motor.
y8/=z6

Re: D16y8 or z6???????? (_.Sarge._)
what else do you think i need for the z6 besides the eagle H-beams Virtara Pistons and a cam and valve springs and intake manifold? i definatly want to boost it. any suggestions on what psi i should boost and what turbo i should get? i think im just gunna keep my y8tranny and use it cause its in real good shape and the gears dont grind. i might want to get a new clutch and flywheel. the top of the z6 was just takin off and rebuilt so its just like new, its just the bottom has somewhere around 180,000 on it. is that gunna be a good buy for like $400.00?(as you can tell i need a lot of help cause i dont really know what to do or what im doin, but everybody has got to start somewhere right?)

Ok here we go...
Vitara pistons are a great way to get into the 300whp range without spending a fortune. The Eagle H-beam rods are going to require you to notch the cylinder walls to be able to fit. This is a very easy process, any machine shop can do it...even you. They are great rods though, and can easily handle 300+
You're not gonna get $400 for that y8 block that you have, so i wouldnt even bother with that. If your z6 head is rebuilt to stock, thats fine. Just replace the cam with a Zex 59300 (stage 2)...you technically don't HAVE to change out the springs with this cam, however i would recommend it. Stock z6 heads minus an aftermarket cam, have made 400whp all day long with a built block.
You will most definitely need to change the clutch too. Some options are Action, Exedy Stage 3, ACT. You dont necessarily have to get a lightened flywheel, you will just need to have your stock one resurfaced (at a machine shop).

My setup is as follows:
z6 Head:
Mild Port and Polish (Intake and Exhaust)
Cometic MLS 75mm HG
ARP Headstuds
Crower Valvesprings
Crower TI Retainers
Crower SS Valves
Zex 59300 Cam
Port Matched IM w/ 68mm BDL TB
z6 Block:
Stock Sleeves (at least for now)
Honed
CP 9:1 Pistons
Crower Rods w/ ARP rod bolts
GE BlockGuard (still debating)
Thats a little more than basic for a build, however i have specific goals.
Also, i have an Exedy Stg 2 clutch. (Cerametallic)

Yea exactly.
Theres many things i left out, but the list i gave you will be plenty to work on for now.
I didnt even get to the Engine Management, turbo setup, or tuning....theres still a long way to go.
