Default d16y8.........Y Y Y!?

Guys, I have a y8 head I bought for my z6. Now i know I can look for the vtec solidnoid which will tell me its a vtec head. But is there anything else? I dont know what the vtec solidnoid looks like, i have an idea but im not sure.
Also there must be a way to find out what exact year it came on. If someone could help me that would be
Im already shopping for cams for it. Please guys, give me some insight. Should i bother getting the head shaved? or changing the gasket? Im debating wheather to jus bolt it on or build it up first

vtec solenoid is a cylindrical lookin thing, gold or bronze in color- its mounted on the intake side of the head by the distributor. i dunno how to tell what exact year it is. if you have a current running engine id take my time and build it up. get new gaskets when u put it on- and look into the hondata im gasket. its like 60 bux and made a noticabble difference in temp between my im and head. you can shave the head, but i wouldnt go more than .020 or .030 inch just in case somehting happens and it warps you wont be able to have it milled again. look around to see if you can find a good deal on a mild port and polish. the y8 head flows a little worse than the z6 head at higher rpms, so a little p&p should help that out

From what i have learned the Y8 head is better then the z6 head. the intake manifold is better then the z6 manifold. I also found the Y8 head for cheap with low milege. I plan on putting a B series throttle body on it, getting the head shaved, changing the cam and gasket. Havent thought of anything else I can do. Not looking to spend a fortune just get the most bang for my buck.
Any suggestions? do u think i wasted my money on the head? everyone I know says its a better head and a good improvmeant.

little late now, but you should read this: http://pub143.ezboard.com/fhon...topic

the y8 intake mani is better for sure, and the head is less prone to detonation; however, the z6 head will flow better if you're making a shload of power. otherwise, they're pretty damn near equal.

interesting read. Although im not boosted. Guys I wont have more then a semi mild N/A build up. If someone who knows could please set me straight that would help alot. Because i dont want to put money into this head if its not worth it.
A friend of mine with a Y8 head on a z6 block, with the head shaved y8 IM gsr TB I H E chipped ecu and so on dyno'd at 134 whp, which sounds good to me. Is the z6 better for this kind of build up? I head it makes better low end power...........slightly. Someone please help, I trust the people who have given me this advice. Ive been told its better by several individuals who have built similar set ups and spent lots of time on the dyno. Those who know........help!!

From what i've heard the y8 manifold is better on the z6 head, etc, etc, but in overall i dont think the y8 head is better then z6 head.

both heads are decent. The y8 has a higher compression and the z6 has a lower compression, but better airflow. I'd like to replace my y8 head with a ported z6 head soon, but if I find a good deal on a ported y8 i'll take it

damn why do i have to learn things the hard way!! i dont want to waste time on this head if its not benifical.......sniff sniff
Wouldent the high compression and even high after a shave make it a better head for a mild N/A???
this was my reasoning.

heh. yeah that's why you do your homework BEFORE you buy parts... not after. cool it on the spending for a little bit until you know what the hell's going on.
