D16Y8 vs D16Z6
What is the difference in these 2 engines?? I have a D16Z6 block and I wanna build it and put it into a 97 civic EX (D16Y8) I would put the D16Y8 head on the Z6 block. What are the differences in the 2 blocks?? How about the heads, do they differ and if so, how????

not smart....for what you put into a sohc to build it correctly you can have a b16a swap and have the same amount of HP for the same price without all the work!!

I believe the blocks are very similar, but the heads are different. The Y8 head has a higher compression cumbustion chamber and better intake manifold. Will be a bolt on affair, except you won't have a knock sensor on the Z6 block, which I believe the Y8 block has. So the better thing to do would be an OBD2 to OBD1 jumper and run an OBD1 ECU. Easier to tune, etc. And the Y8 head would be a better choice, since it will bring up the compression as is on a Z6 block.

Re: D16Y8 vs D16Z6 (Emerica)
So the only differance between the Y8 and Z6 block is the knock sensor?? so if I put the Y8 knock sensor in the Z6 I should be all good? I got a Z6 good running block and I'm gonna put some Eagle Rods and JE pistons in the Z6 and drop it in a 97 civic EX and throw the Y8 head on and turbo it. Is there anything else I have to take into concideration when swaping out the Y8 block for a Z6?

No, the Z6 doesn't even have a knock sensor and since the ECU will be looking for a knock sensor, you'llbe throwing a code and running retarded timing on high end. I don't know if the blocks are exactly the same as far as eternals go, but I do know they are very similar. Look up the piston part numbers and see if they're the same. The reason I said to run OBD1 ECU, is because it's easier to tune, and you don't have it looking for a knock sensor

I know the Z6 does not have a knock sensor (OBD1) but I'll be running the OBD2 ECU and I was just asking it I throw a knock sensor on the Z6 block if it will configure everything correctly. The car is a 97 Civic EX. Or say I do run a OBD1 ecu is the knock sensor the ONLY difference as farr as the ECU is concerned??

Knock sensor, air intake temperature sensor, and the crank fluctuation sensor, all things the z6 motor don't have, and if you run an obd2 ecu, it'l throw up codes when it can't find those sensors.

the pistons on the Y8 have a deeper dish also. A Y8 Head on a Z6 block would have nice compression. You would want the Y8 intake mani also....more volume there....the Type-r mani of the d-series
