Default d16y8 turbo ...concerns....

i have a 99 civic ex coupe bone stock with 193,xxx miles on it...when i bought it , it already had high millage not sure how many owners were before me....

anyways i wanna get a turbo set up ...i was wondering if i port and polish and change the internals will it b able to withstand the power and turbo without it blowing up or should i just try to get another engine the same with lower millage or is there anything i can do to re built ....

its my daily driver , just wanna add a little more excitement to it .... i been debating whether i should bother with a d16 turbo or just try and upgrade to a b16 ....any info , input , would b appreciated plz

if the engine still runs good and compression is good, id say go for it. just don't exceed 6-8 lbs of boost unless you do change out the internals.

I boosted my old 96 EX wit ha Y8 and I had no troubles with it. Note that it only had 63k on the motor.

my recommendation is, do a leakdown test, compression test, and replace anything that looks worn. Check the cross etching in the cylinders, clean EVERYTHING! replace old gaskets and whatnot, then boost. Probably cheaper than buying a new motor

as far as pressure, depends on your turbo, I ran a T3/4 .60trim on my Y8 and pushed some pretty high psi, yet I had a built motor and lowered compression to 8.4:1 from 9.6:1 cause I planned on boosting high.

You can probably get away with 8psi on stock. however, on a good tune you can easily do 15-19 psi.

but once again, make sure your motor is healthy before you try to do anything too extensive to it. If you dont have a manual for it, download one and see about all the maintenance.

Enjoy the project :D I loved my boosted coupe. gonna boost the new one as soon as I can gather up the money.

kool...well my motor is still running strong and doesnt shake still looks in good condition and i was planing on replacing internals and other parts necessary before boosting just wasnt sure if it was worth to rebuilt or if it was easier to just buy a new motor

I'd go for the rebuild so you get the experience and learn your motor.

however..if it's your DD...ya might want another motor so you can still drive the car and build the other one then just swap.

my biggest question is even if i do rebuilt how reliable will it b due to high millage ....i dont wanna put work and money into rebuilding it if its gonna blow soon
i know the d16 motor is not too expensive but if its wiser to save up for a newer engine i woudn mind saving up either
i would love 2 rebuild and get 2 know my motor

dude i had a d16y8 on 10psi and it was a dd and i drove it for at least 100k and it ran great..i just did extrem maintence like tune ups and stuff..oh also it was stock internals and the only thing i had on it that was aftermarket was a high voulme oil pump..12 gallons per minute just to keep my internals all lube up since the y8 oil pumps suck dick
