Default D16Y8-Turbo

I was looking at getting a drag 3 turbo for my D16Y8, i was wondering what kind of power and torque i would get at first and how i could build up the engine for higher boost

Dont bother boostin a D16. Buy an LS motor and boost it.. More torque, more options to upgrade, etc... You would have to totally rebuild your bottom end to even make the boost worth it. On stock internals dont count on more than 4-6 psi of boost, which is about 40-45whp if you are lucky.

check out this page for info regarding SOHC turbos. A Drag kit is good but it's big t3-t4 turbo will take a while to spool up. My guess is that with the kit, it'd add somewhere between 60-75whp on stock boost. A kit that I've been highly impressed with is the Apex kit. Boosting a DOHC motor will yield higher results usually but you still can get great power from a SOHC. Check the forced induction forum as well and read up. Lots of great info.

The turbos on Drag kits suck, they are made horribly. The rods are not held down properly, therefore you will need to get it rebuilt soon after you install it. Get the Greddy it, the turbo may be smaller and you may not be able to boost above 12-14psi, but you got a good turbo. If you have a doubt on how well the Greddy turbo will perform, you need to look up VTC_Civic on this board. He is making 212hp d16y8 with Hondata on his car.

I own a turbonetics turbo and can honestly say I would beat down the first technician I met from Crap-o-netics...ehem..I mean, turbonetics.

Greddy does seem to make a good kit but DAMN, when they hell are they going to come out with a turbo for the 96-98 EX Civics. [yea I know you can fit a 5 gen on a 6 gen]

Ive talked to VTC_Civic about boosting mine (d16y7) and he keeps suggesting the Greddy kit. Ill try to explain it like he did to me: The Drag kit is more of a hardcore "I want to tinker with everyrhitng" kit. The Apexi is very nice, but overpriced for what you get, and the Greddy kit is the most bolt on and forget it. Somebody correct me if Im wrong, but thats what I got from talking to him! And good luck with boosting!

Why waste money on an LS, when you could get a B16.

Do you have a D16? I doubt it. And if you do, did you boost it... even more unlikely. So where did this comment come from? Try again when you have experience with what you are talking about.

BTW... I run a drag kit on my d16z6. Believe me... It's faster than most people think.

I have a 97 2-door EX witha D16. I was going to boost it, but the 4-6 psi that it could handle didnt seem worth it to me for the price you would have to pay. Even if you built the bottom end before you turbo'd, you might as well save your money and buy a b18. D16's are great engines, just not really my style (too slow).

Why waste money on an LS, when you could get a B16.
Im not even going to waste my time answering this.....LS is a WAAAYYYY better motor to boost (lower compression). If he was staying n/a i would say get the B16, but hes not

Rydaddy,

WHy don't you go talk to VTC_CiViC, He is pushing 9.5 PSI on stock internals and is at 215 WHP.

D16Y8.

These bolt on turbo kits such as Greddy's are great. Safe, low boost applications, with plenty of power on demand.

hey, you have a D16 right, why didn't you just buy and LS or an SI vs. the ex. Don't waste time talkin trash about something you know nothing of. My little ex pushes 8psi on a stock bottom end w/ only a fuel pump and a vafc. No detonation and i'm sure you'd wish you had 8psi when i pull on you or you watch me pull on almost any B or H series. Damn, I hate it when people make stupid comments about the D series motor. They think it's weak, it can't make any power, well how does 11 seconds sound to you, and that will be with an automatic. Anyway, boost your D16, it's worth it to be original vs. swapping. Plus if you don't have the money to put a turbo or any bolt ons, your not gonna beable to beat your turbo D16. I raced at the track a guy with a 96 hatch with a b16 slightlly modded and i pulled on him.

You can use the kit from the 92-95 ex. You just need to modify the blue box to work with your car, that's what i did. and you won't use the first o2 sensor.

Okay look, everyone is getting off topic. He asked about turbo'ing a SOHC motor, not about swaping, not about which will produce more power. Just Help with what he has. Some people are content to work with what they have and make something nice. Everyone has their own route, different strokes...

Try to help him out if you can without throwing too much in the mix. Not everyone can afford swaps, wanna do a swap, or can wait 2 years to save the money for one they jus wanna have fun now. Can anyone give him info on HIS topic?

your right RSZero1. Ok well to answer you about power, i'm not 100% sure. I don't know where drag has the stock psi set for. If it's at about 5psi, look for about 50hp gain. To build the motor, there are a ton of companies out there. As far as what to do, I personally plan on going with eagle rods, JE custom pistons 9.0:1, resleeved block, bored to 1.7, skunk2 valves, valvesprings, retainers, cam gear, and stage2 cam. For fuel, i'll go with AEM fuel rail, AEM fpr, BBK 255lph fuel pump, and RC Enginering 370cc injectors. I'm not sure about ignition, but i'm sure a local shop or someone else can help you plan that out. I know you can make a significant amount of power out of this motor, so don't get discouraged.
