Default D16Y8 Timing Help / Getting it to run right

Hey guys,

Here's the scoop, just got my motor put together and having a few issues getting it to run right. I have a D16Y8 head with a Z6 block, running Crome, have an AEM Tru-Time timing gear, comp cams cam 10300 i believe it is, p28 chipped ecu(obd1), ATI Super Damper.

I set the crank to TDC (Cylinder 1 TDC, I always check this with a long stick to make sure the cylinder is at the top), and I set the Cam gear to point up with the arrow.

This should be perfect mechanical timing, the car will start but as soon as I give it gas it sputters out. The only way to keep it going is to adjust using my cam gear and advance the timing a few degrees.

I need to get a timing light to set the proper ignition timing, I am running on a basemap I setup from a stock D16Y8 which I believe is set to 12 degree on the ignition tables.

Any tips/advice.. Need to get it running right.

Is the firing order right on your spark plugs?

Yes. 1-3-4-2 and brand new plugs, wires and dizzy.

I think I'm missing some crucial steps:

1) I need to set it to TDC 0 at the cam gear again
2) Jump the service connector
3) Use a timing light to set it 16 degree BTDC (OR 12 for a Y8 - please correct me, the timing maps on crome all read 12)

I was reading the computer tries to adjust a basetiming and it fights you if you don't reset the service connector. I've been trying to do all of this without a timing light, not setting the service connector and advancing mechanical timing.

Set back to default and ensure the crank is at TDC by using the markings on the lower timing belt cover and crank. Don't have a lower timing belt cover, than find one.

When I use my timing light, do I aim it down from the front or rear? I have a lower timing cover, there is a notch or something I can look down and line up with the crank pulley?

There should be two, one that looks like a V that you line up the marks but theres another one that has a point. You need to look at the pulley with the point inside the V. That's when you reference the pulley marks and adjust your timing. Let me try to find a pic. And it's 12 degrees

Red circle is the V, blue is the pointer and the black line is how you need to look at them, straight down so you can see the pointer in between the V. Then reference the timing marks on the pulley

Okay so this is what I did:

1) Set the crank back to TDC, made sure the cam gear was also pointing up. For all intense purposes the motor should be at TDC 0 degrees.

2) Jumped the service connector

3) Crank and it starts easily.. But as soon as you give it any throttle it dies.

4) Tried using a timing light to advance it 12 degree BTDC and I am unable to do it unless I retard the cam gear mechanically (it is an adjustable) Whilest moving the distributor to get it to that settings. NOTE -> I am using the ATI Super Damper with the timing marks on top, and using a lower timing belt cover from a D16A6 so there is an arrow I am using to align timing.

5) Starts and runs and still bogs and and almost stalls when given gas. UNLESS I advance the timing mechanically again using the timing gear, I have to advance it almost 7 degree or more to get it to rev properly. (meaning, not stall or bog down when I give it gas)

6) With the timing advanced, seems less troublesome. Givigint it gas causes it to rev fine, without stalling - BUT the engine seems harder to turn over when starting...

SO, what is the problem? Here is some background - I have a 4 bar MAP sensor, and I am using crome. This motor is a turbo/built motor so I started with a Y8 basemap, adjusted for my 480CC injectors, used BOOST TOOLS to add the boost columns and I added my map sensor there. COULD it be the map sensor? The tune? Do I need to add more fuel?

Please any help would be awesome.

Someone surely must have an idea of what's going on?

Answer probably lies in here. Especially towards the end

There are also markings to line up the cam as well.
