D16Y8 swap.
 

I just bought a 98 Civic LX and it has the D16Y7. I want to switch the engine head for the D16Y8 so I can add a little more HP and get the VTEC. Can anyone tell me all the parts i'll need to do change the heads and where I can purchase them online? And about how much this will cost?

i think that you will need the head, ECU, intake manifold, Vtec solenoid, wiring harness, and i think that may be it. My advice, b-series swap.

As to your query, you'll need the whole motor (the blocks are different), tranny (best part), ECU, harness, and you'll have to do some wiring

The service manual shows all the bottom end components (including the blocks) to be the same. What is different between the Y7 and Y8 blocks?

You don't need an EX transmission, but it comes highly recommended. Also, the intake, throttle body, intake manifold, header and exhaust except, I think, for the muffler is different on the EX.

As for swapping the heads, it is called a "mini-me conversion." There is a lot of information on this site and others about how to do a mini-me and what parts are needed. You don't have to change the whole motor to get the Y8 head going.

There is a very slight and almost non-noticable difference between the y7 and y8 blocks...


Take a look down an open block and see the difference, the y8 has a little more material between the cylinder sleeves than the y7, thats the only difference you will find besides the stamp

You mean the thickness between cylinders? Or the thichness of the sleeve itself? Does the Service Manual show this difference? If so, could you give me a reference?

I have comptemplated a Y7/Y8 conversion and am just curious, that's all.
