Default D16Y8 Seized Camshaft

I have a question regarding my D16Y8. Only has 120,000miles on the motor. Synthetic oil changes and been mostly babied most of its life. I did have the engine oil pressure light come on so I parked it. changed the oil pressure sensor, but the light came on next day. listening to a friends poor advice and needing a vehicle, I used it for roughly 20 miles. and let it run for about 2 hours total to keep the motor warm in winter. Everything sounded great but the engine stalled midway through driving and the engine whirred.

Then it would run for anywhere to 5 - 10 seconds and stall completely. again, engine sounding normal from what I could tell.

I towed it to a local mechanic and he mentioned that the Camshaft seized.

I want to fix it , but it might be best to get a whole new head due to me driving it, on what it seems to be low oil pressure... My neglect and poor decision is probably going to cost me some money!

I'm just wondering what the best action is to get my car up and running?

New head? used head? I dont want to spend more than 2-3K if possible.

Thanks in advance

First thing I'd do is take it apart and assess the damage first hand. At least this way you can determine what actually needs to be replaced rather than guessing. Having said that, a complete head should be rather cheap but that would really depend on your location.

Outside of a stock repair and/or replace, you can use just about any D-Series head from 88-00 with many pros/cons.

cam holders might be fucked and out of spec. Best be ready for a 'replacement' head and a 'new' oil pump. You'll need to investigate why you had low oil pressure.

short of a full tear down, inspection and rebuild (of the engine) or replacement (long block/good used engine) the safe assumption is that everything was damaged to some degree when you lost oil pressure. replacing the head only provides half of a good engine.

if you're doing the work yourself and you know from experience that you can swap a known-good head in a day or less with lasting results... sure take the risk. that risk being that the new head fixes the seized camshaft issue but does nothing about the potential damage that's been done to the crank journals/main bearings/rod bearing.

A week, a month, 6 months later... the crank seizes or you toss a rod or spin a rod bearing. then you're forced to replace the whole engine anyway. If you did the work as described above.. fine you lost a day's worth of effort and $30 of parts (the head would likely still be good, but the gasket set would be a loss). If a mechanic does the work of replacing the head I don't expect you'll be driving away for less than $1k for a quality repair. now that's down the drain...

don't let me discourage you from fixing the car. just know what you're getting into and think it through.

Thanks for all the advice. Appreciate the quick reply.

I do not have any mechanical skill going into engine repair. But my dad and I have replaced nearly every component that needs to be done on its scheduled intervals regarding suspension, engine and the car is mint with no rust, with newer winter tires and new summer tires and rims... So I'm kinda stuck on what to do... I spent a couple hours looking for a full swap, but in my location (Canada) there isn't anything for D16Y8 complete swaps. I'm getting repair costs of 5K CAD for a engine swap to 7K CAD for me to send my engine in for a rebuild and swap... Although I had this car for 12+ years, I think it might be time to move on... If I had the time, a heated garage and the patience lol. I'd probably attempt it.

But that being said. Do you guys have any places where I could purchase a rebuilt or even used D16Y8 with warranty? I'd love to go the Type-R route. but judging by repair costs, the D series is already looking out of reason for me to repair, even though I've put 3-4+ grand into parts over the past few years

Thanks again for all the help. I would be lost without this thread on what I should do with this situation.

Best bet is to check your local yard, ask them to compression test the block and do it while you're there. Recommend you replace any gaskets and seals on the block while its out.
