Default D16Y8 Knocking Sound

My wife was driving home today, and heard a knocking sound from the car(97 Civic Ex, auto, 130-140k miles) at startup, and shut the engine off and started again when she got home, and heard more knocking. The car had oil slightly above the low point, filled to the high with no difference.

I read that the Y8 has issues with spun bearings. Would a spun bearing or other engine knock source cause a check engine light via the knock sensor? I really hope it's a simple issue, but is almost certainly coming from the head or block.

Thanks in advance

When you pulled out the dipstick did you see any metal shavings?

None at all, there was nothing out of the ordinary.

I just checked again, and there is some vibration in the engine as well. Would it be possible for the timing belt to skip a tooth on the sprocket and cause this problem? I'm just trying to think of other ideas...

Use an engine stethoscope or something similar to pinpoint the source of the noise. Is it coming from the head, block, or drive/timing belt area?

Update:

I used a screwdriver as a stethoscope, found lots noise from the block and belt areas. I looked at the dipstick again, and there are tiny metal shavings in the oil. I'm gonna tell her not to drive it for now, as I don't trust it.

yea if there is any knocking sound its usally bad news if there is slight tapping from the top of the motor it is just lifters but if its knocking hard it could be a rod or valve i would get it checked out asap

I appreciate all the quick responses. As a rod bearing is gone (at least one), the fuel tank leaks (can only hold 1/2 tank without emitting strong vapors), a/c compressor is dead, trunk leaks, etc., we're going to replace it. I don't think it's worth all that work for a car this old that she wants gone anyway.

The car has an old set (2004 maybe) of Tein Basics, so offroad may not be fun for anyone in the car. May try to trade in, if not I'm not sure, probably will part it out.

I have the WRX for offroad anyway.
