D16Y8 Knocking Sound
My wife was driving home today, and heard a knocking sound from the car(97 Civic Ex, auto, 130-140k miles) at startup, and shut the engine off and started again when she got home, and heard more knocking. The car had oil slightly above the low point, filled to the high with no difference.
I read that the Y8 has issues with spun bearings. Would a spun bearing or other engine knock source cause a check engine light via the knock sensor? I really hope it's a simple issue, but is almost certainly coming from the head or block.
Thanks in advance

None at all, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
I just checked again, and there is some vibration in the engine as well. Would it be possible for the timing belt to skip a tooth on the sprocket and cause this problem? I'm just trying to think of other ideas...

Update:
I used a screwdriver as a stethoscope, found lots noise from the block and belt areas. I looked at the dipstick again, and there are tiny metal shavings in the oil. I'm gonna tell her not to drive it for now, as I don't trust it.

i wouldnt start the car up any eaither take the oil pan off and check bearings you may just get away with replaceing the rod and main bearings and not have to turn or get a new crank thats if it hasnt messed it up yet

Re: D16Y8 Knocking Sound
I appreciate all the quick responses. As a rod bearing is gone (at least one), the fuel tank leaks (can only hold 1/2 tank without emitting strong vapors), a/c compressor is dead, trunk leaks, etc., we're going to replace it. I don't think it's worth all that work for a car this old that she wants gone anyway.

Re: D16Y8 Knocking Sound
The car has an old set (2004 maybe) of Tein Basics, so offroad may not be fun for anyone in the car. May try to trade in, if not I'm not sure, probably will part it out.
I have the WRX for offroad anyway.

Re: D16Y8 Knocking Sound
looking for anyone that can help me...my d16y8 is making a strange noise which seems to be coming from the tranny, kind of a rattling only when its cold....heres a vid of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWfGiLqWrw could it possibly be the throwout bearing or bad pressure plate?
