I have a 1998 civic 2dr ex 1.6 D16y8 sohc vtec that I am replacing the head on. The casting # on my original head is P2J-5. It has the lost motion assy. on top. I purchased a remanufactured head for a D16y8 but it has a casting # P2J-1. It came with roller rockers and no lost motion assy. The heads look the same except for the valve train. Will I have any problems with this swap?

does the new head have a vtec solenoid on the dizzy side?

Yes, it has the solenoid on the back passenger side of the head. Everything seemed to be the same.

People miss this every time. The Y8 does not have roller rockers. No LMA's and rollers = Y5
It's been debated how the Y5 head would work with the Y8 ecu because of how vtec and vtec-e differ. You would also have to deal with the egr passages on the Y5 that your Y8 doesn't have.

So this head will not just bolt on and work without modifying in some way.

In short you would much better off getting the correct head. I don't have much experience with the Y5 so maybe someone who does can chime in. Will it bolt to your block? Yes. Will your intake manifold bolt to the head? I think it will bolt up but I think the egr pasages on the Y5 head is where the water pasage is on the Y8. To get around this I beleive you would need to use the Y5 intake mani. Then you get to vtec vs. vtec-e. With vtec on a SOHC you run on 16 valves and when it engages the 8 intake valves operate off the high lift cam lobes.Vtec-e runs in a 12 valve mode (8 exhaust + 4 intake) which has a very low lift on the intake side for economy. When vtec-e engages (@ 2800-3000 rpm I beleive) it locks all 8 intake valves together so it now runs on all 16 valves with a slightly increased lift.

Well there you go. As long as you still have a useable valve train from the old head.

Unfortunately the reason for the new remanufactered head was because the valve train is junk.

Okay, so what I've gathered here is that the manufactured head you got for your engine is infact a Y5 head.

If you bought this from a legitimate shop, I'd bitch because they gave you the wrong part.

Thanks for all the great info. I talked to the shop and explained the difference between the vtec and vtec-e. They are sending me the correct head. Without this forum I would have not questioned the head and would be scratching my head wondering why the car is running so bad!
