d16y8 head codes
so i was looking at a 2000 manual d16y8 head to start my mini me
the head code is p2j-2 stamped 99 on rs
i searched all the head codes i found
D16Y8
96 EX D16Y8 Auto------P2J-2 stamped 95 on rs of head
97 EX D16y8 5spd-----P2J-4 --- "97" stamped on the right
97 EX D16Y8 Auto-----P2J-6 "97" stamped on rs of head
97 EX D16Y8 Auto-----P2J-7
97 EX D16Y8 5sp-----P2J-6 "96" stamped on right side

99 EX D16Y8 5sp------P2J-4
00 EX D16Y8 5sp------P2J-3 "99" stamped on right side
so im wondering if there could be more head codes for a 2000 y8 head? or if its a d15b 3 stage vtec head? it only has 1 solinoid though

Re: d16y8 head codes
Different lot? By looking at the small head code list, the last number doesn't seem relevant. D16Y8 head appears to be P2J-#. The # doesn't seem to matter to it being a Y8 head.
Could be they had 8 casting machines going at once and the last number says which machine it was cast in that year..... Anyone's guess really.

Re: d16y8 head codes
P2J is a Y8 single intake VTEC head if I recall correctly. The non-vtec and 3 stage heads will have a different 3 digit designator. The 9/6 to 0/0 designator is the year of the casting. I'm not personally aware of any real changes in the casting or parts used from 96 to 2000. The end designators, in my limited scope, tend to be revisions of the same part. I follow a lot of non-Honda part codes and they fit the same bill. Perhaps slightly different cam?, different sensor locations? At any rate, I believe it would be something minor.

Re: d16y8 head codes
as far as i know the p2j-# heads have a difference in regards to the d16 side of things so for instance the y5 would run one set of intake valves and both exhaust but until vtec kicks in it will use all four for each cylinder does that go for all the d16 heads or just the y5? i can be heavily wrong please school me XD

Re: d16y8 head codes
Ron started a cylinder head identification thread a while back
Basically the p2j- part designated casting design, all d16 motors have this stamp
P2j-7 would mean cast in month 7, and then the stamp on right side indicates the year. (It could also just signify that it came from one production line, or what casting machine mold was used)
The casting pieces on the left side or passengers side designate the design and designation of the head casting. On a HX these castings are extremely pronounced and upside down. On a y7 they are barely readable. I haven't seen a y8 so I can't tell you what that casting looks like
Why did the designate the month of the casting, so they could perform any recalls if one months castings were imperfect or to better sort items for old vs new inventory production
For example here is my hx head stampings
