Default D16Y8, to go turbo or to get a Z6 and turbo

Hi everyone, this will be my exit post from being a trial user so I wanted to ask if it'd be worth it to go turbo on the Y8 or if I should get a Z6 and build it up. I was thinking of just using DSM 16g turbo / injectors and crome chip on the Y8, but after reading into how shitty the oil pump is on the Y8 and how often people spin the #4 main bearing, I'm having second thoughts. I do know that EnDyn offers a beefier oil pump for the Y8, but if I'm going to have to pull apart the bottom end to install it, I might as well just get another motor that already has a better oil pump and build that up, wouldn't you think so? Let me know what options I have and thanks in advance!

what yr car do u have????

i myself am building up my y8 since thats what i have in my 96 ex coupe, if i had a z6 motor lying around id be buidling that. the d16y motors are known for spun rod bearings and shitty oil pumps and yes endyn does offer a tutorial on how to enhance the perforemance of the d16y oil pump.

if your buidling a z6 and wanting to put it in a 96 and up civic body youll need to do this.

you need these from a Z6. Distributor, VTEC solenoid, crank pulley, cam gear, timing belt, alternator belt, and timing belt covers.

All of the sensors from the OBD2 harness hook right up to the OBD1 sensors. The TDC sensor is on the crank on a Y8, and in the distributor on a Z6. You need to repin the dist wires to match them correctly to the harness, or you can buy a conversion harness from Rywire.com.

There is also no knock sensor on the Z6, so that will be left sitting as well. I slapped my Y8 mani onto the Z6 so I had no issues with the sensors on the IM. OBD2A - OBD1 harness and a chipped P28 spec ECU.

You don't want to use a Y8 crank pulley on the Z6. You will have nightmares.

ive seen on other forums some nice high hp y8's but i see more z6's than i do y8's.
also the y8 heads dont like timing and can be a little bit complex when tuning as opposed to the z6 heads.

for whichever block you decide to rebuild z6 or y8, id recommend a budget oriented build with some eagle or scat rods with some vitara pistons, 75 or 75.5mm depending on if your cylinder walls need a light hone or a .5mm over bore

hey guys, thanks for the quick reply and the useful info. I drive a 97 Acura 1.6EL (same thing as Honda Domani in Japan), and if I could, I would just slap the turbo on with the other goodies and call it a day, but I need this thing to not strand me in the middle of the road when school starts again in September.

There's a guy selling a Z6 longblock without exhaust mani for $80 bucks, but it threw a rod through the oil pan. Would it be worth it to pick it up and rebuild?

It wouldnt be worth buying a motor that has already been blown up once. Spend the extra money buy a decent block. z6 is the way to go though

if the block is still in good condition then id say go ahead and get it. then all ud have to do is do a full bottom end rebuild and maybe a new oil pan since the rod shot thru the oil pan........

I'll have to see the block & the head first I guess, but at the very least I'll need to change the thrown rod and have a machine shop turn the rod journals before putting on a new bearing, right? Or would it be cheaper to just find another z6 crank that is in a good condition?

find another z6 crank that is still in good condition then send it off to get micropolished and balanced.

u can regrind the crankshaft thats scored up but i think itd be better off to just find another z6 crank and send it off to get balanced and polished.

dan benson can micropolish and balance it for you for like 150 bucks.
