Why? Seems like a waste of a perfectly good powerplant. I wouldn't trade a VTEC-D for a B16 ever.

The y8 is actually a pretty good motor, but still on to your question.

You should at least try to get an obd1 b16. It will make the entire process easier.
I assume you are wanting to run the motor with an obd1 ecu also, correct?

Wiring involved is:
Reuse your stock '96 harness. You need to cut off the injector plugs, distributor plugs and alternator plug and put the obd1 plugs on your obd2 harness.
I cant remember if the y8 uses a knock sensor or not. If it doesnt, you'll have to run one wire for b16s ks.
Then puchase an obd2-obd1 jumper harness and plug in the obd1 ecu.

Thats about it.

for the same amount of tourqe and hp you can get from a b series motor you can do with a d series motor, just cheaper. But, just my 2 cents

b-series is just a better base powerplant than d-series. Some people have some really fast all motor b-series but you don't hear about really fast all motor d-series.

if you get a b16a2 there shouldn't be a problem if your car is a 99-00 then it is just a plug and play thingsince that is OBD2-B, other wise a few things might have to be changed if you get a b16a3 from a del sol. Since most are OBD1 you would have to use your injectors from your Y8 motor which is the same as a b-series just the correct OBD you need for your car. Your original harnes from the car, Change the plug from the alternator, and swap the internal goods from the distributer and use the casing for the b-series motor. Its that hard to figure it out. let me know if you have any questons I did this to my car when I put a B16a2 motor in my 94 del sol.
