For the love of all mankind ... there's a massive inter-connected network out there .... you may have heard of it. I think they call it the internet.... sounds crazy, I know. But just look at the stuff you can find on it!

Ha, what a coincidence, I just bought a '97 civic EX today.
Well I can tell you a bit about it, it's available in a 2 door and a 4 door, makes 127hp at the flywheel from the factory and redlines at 7k RPM. It is available in both a 4 speed automatic and a 5 speed manual. It has optional ABS as well as an optional spoiler. I'm not sure if the moonroof was optional but all the EX's I've seen have it. It's a 1.6L VTEC motor and using the basic horsepower equation puts down 95.25lb-ft tq. at the flywheel - assume a 15-25% loss of power from the engine to the wheels in a 4 cylinder, front wheel drive, front engine car. Obviously real numbers cannot be obtained w/o a dyno, but I suspect the HP would dyno around 105whp.
The VTEC comes on ~4800 RPM, at least that's what it is on the Z6, I could be wrong there. It's not a "flip" switch at that RPM. It CAN come on past that RPM, it bases when to turn on depending on your MAP sensor reading and your TPS reading....so if you're light on the gas it may not kick on till 6k...but if you bash it through the floor it'll engage at the lowest point possible. But to answer your question in short - I'm pretty sure the VTEC engagement point is 4800 RPM.
The combustion chamber got a little smaller since the Z6 (the 92-'95 EX's) but the crank/block stayed the same (in terms of dimensions, the coolant lines are a bit different). Different pistons from the Z6 as well with a smaller dome and a little bit lower of a compression height.
The connecting rods are the same as the Z6, though some people remove the middle gasket on the OEM 3-layer headgasket of the Y8, making for a bump in compression ratio. Though stock it's the same as the Z6 in terms of height.
This makes for a 9.76:1 static compression ratio opposed to the Z6 which had a 9.14.
So you gain some compression with an earlier redline (the Z6 has a 7200 RPM redline) and it basically equals the same horsepower with the Y8 having a bit more torque - where the Z6 was factory rated at 125hp and the Y8 is rated at 127.
Obviously a race between a Z6 and a Y8 in the same weight chassis would depend on driver and nothing more.
I'm 99.9% sure the gear ratios are exactly the same but I haven't looked at the Y8 trans specs yet. Though if you find them, the specs for the Z6 if I remember correctly are as follows:
1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.9
3rd: 1.25
4th: .909
5th: .702
Rear end/final drive: 4.25
I don't remember what the reverse drive is...I don't race in reverse .
I hope that answers your Q's, I know the D series more than any other engine so if you have any Q's feel free to PM me.
EDIT:
PS: If you're going to upgrade it, change the oil pump first. The ones on the Z6 were fine - the ones on the Y8 are absolute ****.

Dunno, I pulled 90% of that info off the top of my head...but I type ~70 - 90 wpm (words per minute) @ 100% accuracy - and I'm not doing anything else right now (why do you think I'm trolling the forums? ) - so I have no problem explaining it.
