d16y8
hey i just wanted to introduce myself, the names jimmy. i used to have a 98 civic ex coupe black before but i crashed it haha, now im in the market for a 96-00 civic hatchback, the EK (EJ for those technical ppl). well anyways i just wanted to ask a quick question about the performance of d16y7's with the y8 vtec head. are they reliable and do they have any specific advantages to just swapping in a whole y8 engine in? because if it isnt ill just drop in a y8 engine.

if you drop in a y8? why not drop in at least a b16. Your putting in the labor of putting in a new motor, might as well throw in a b-series bro. Just my opinion....

Yeah, its really not worh the trouble for a y8. Just save a little longer and swap in a b16. As for the actual quesiton: A full d16y8 engine would be the desired setup, but a lot of people just swap the head on their d16y7's so they can gain vtec. Although many people who have done it say it wasn't worth the time and money in the end.

i'm not sure how much hp you acutally gain from going from non vtec to vtec, but my y8 is slow as expletive...haha...

yeah haha im kinda set on the y8 now. im only willing to spend like 500 dollars or so on it. the b16 is nice but also a lil too expensive for me. i was planning to do a small turbo setup on the d engine, trying to hit maybe 200hp or something of that manner.

You can easily see 200hp on a stock y8. I've done the b16 swap into a crx and am currently building a turbo y8. The b swap was fun and pretty quick, but after getting some seat time in a ej with a turbo y8, I have decided to go that route. So far I am only missing engine mgmt (NepTune) and the actually tuning, but my build has run me just shy of $1500. On the other hand, the b swap ran me over $2000, and it was a usdm motor! Think about it, you can swap the b in and get 160hp, or turbo the stock d and get 200-250hp. Besides, d series are like disposable razors these days, you can find em anywhere for cheap.

Re: (xquiksilvazx)
boost the y7 you have now. why bother with a y8 at all? you can get the same amount of power and save on initial investment. if anything upgrade the intake mani to a z6 or y8 since the y7 flows like crap. then get an ex transmission since the dx tranny is geared horribly. oh and b16s are slooowwww... i can keep up 3/4 of the way down the track in my almost stock dx hatch against them.

Re: (hatchnideas)
I too have a dx hatch that came with the stock y7, but if you are wanting to boost, you will get better numbers out of a y8. I bought a complete y8 and a spare z6 block for $175. The head on the y8 just flows a lot better than the y7, not to mention you get vtak. IMO the design of the y7 intake and throttle body are just not conducive to boost. So just look around and find you a cheap y8, or z6.
