D16Y7/Y8 - knock sensor question
I got a 97 Civic Ex with no motor. Friend of mine is selling me his D16Y7 motor. I have Y8 head, IM, 5 spd. trans, harness, & ECU. Am I gonna have to find a knock sensor for the Y7 or is this a straight up swap? Anything else I may need???

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
Maybe I should have stated that I was searching for the answer as well as asking the question.
"Am I gonna have to find a knock sensor for the Y7 or is this a straight up swap?"
Out of the the hyper link's you posted (which I have already read twice) I didnt see the answer to my question. As for me asking "Anything else I may need?" I assumed someone with some knowledge about this kind of swap would see the list of parts I have vs. the motor Im getting then see my question about the knock sensor and then go from there.
Im not some kid out of high school asking "how to change my oil?"

Here are Google results for all of HT using the keywords mini-me and knock sensor.

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
No, you don't need to wire up the knock sensor. If you decide to do a mini me you would use the ECU and harness for the y8.
It's hard to assume how complete your parts list is based on what you told us.
Here's a quote from a thread I found:
Another solution which might be easier than tapping your block is to run a chipped p28. It won't look for the knock sensor. This way you can change to OBD1 as well so if boost is in your future you'll be doing this down the road anyway.

The secondary O2 sensor goes into the catalytic converter after the "header" portion of the D16Y8 engine and is integrated into the cars chassis harness, the y7 is integrated into the engine harness. You'll basically need to extend the secondary O2 sensor from your Y7 engine and use a cat that has an O2 bung in it or use your y7 exhaust manifold instead of the Y8's or whatever header you used. For reference. For the EVAP not sure just make sure you hooked it up, its on the fuel rail.

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
If your going to be doing a mini me with the Y7 bottom end and Y8 upper and using the Y8 ECU you will need to add the knock sensor. The Y7 block will accept a knock sensor with no modification.

From what i've been told before by other friends who have done this swap, you really don't need another wire harness, just another ecu and you can wire up the vtec to the ecu. There are a couple diagrams out there if you do the research.

Will his harness already have the knock sensor input on it?

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
With the Y7 harness you have to add the knock wire. If your using the Y8 harness it's wired for knock so just plug it in. The OP didn't specify what harness they had. I was refering to the block itself. The knock sensor location is already threaded on the Y7.

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
Exactly, right under the drivers side intake manifold runner on the Y7 block is the location for the knock sensor, already tapped and ready for you to thread it in. At least on my 99 Y7 block that's where it is and it took me all of 45 seconds to thread it in and tighten it down.

I read a whole bunch of stuff and people make y7/y8 mini swap seem really unreliable. i would rather stick to a original motor than a frankensteined up motor.

Re: D16Y7/Y8 questions
If you use the Y8 harness you'll have to manually wire in the seconday O2 sensor since it's part of the cabin harness on the EX models. If you use the Y7 harness you'll need to add vtec and knock sensor wiring.

Re: D16Y7/Y8 - knock sensor question
If the parts are cheap and readily avail, I guess I could see doing the mini-me. Otherwise I wouldn't go hunting down parts for it. After all is spent on new cap, distributor, timing belt, head gasket, etc etc etc...you could've almost gotten a JDM d15b vtec or something.
