D16Y7 - What head is best?
Hello everyone! Im new to the single cams, have helped with some real quick n/a h22s tho..... and have some questions! Sorry if these have been answered some where else, i just havent found them yet.
So here is my dilema. I have a 97 civic dx with the D16Y8, non vtec. I rencently bought a bunch of honda parts from a guy and a z6 vtec head was one of those things.
Is it worth it, or can it be done, to put the z6 head on the y8 block? I know its obd2 and i plan on doing the obd2-obd1 harness conversion. Or can i do it with obd2? I was thinking of boosting it later sometime. Give me some opinions!

Re: D16Y8, What head is best?
I believe you mean d16y7 i would go with a y8 head if your car is obd2 you can get a y8 head and just use a y8 ecu for the swap

Re: D16Y8, What head is best?
Ok, well.... heres the deal. It must have had a head swap then of that doesnt compute. The block marking is d16y8. But there is no vtec solenoid on the rear part of the head. Is there a marking on the head i should be looking at and where would that be?? Im gonna try posting some pics tomorrow afternoon.
The intake currently on the car has the t/b on top of the manifold instead of off to the side like an obd

Ok, i just went and checked.. it is a D16Y7, non vtec of course. Ive been doing alot of research and confussed myself a little. lol
Anyhow, i bought a new trans (bought the car w a bad one) and with that came a vtec head and obd1 ecu. The guy i got it from said it was a z6 head, where would a part no. be to verify which head it is?? And would it be worth using the z6 head?? Ill try to post some pics tomorrow afternoon.

If you have a z6 head use it. It will work fine as for the ecu you may just want to get a obd2 ecu there cheap or you can use a obd2-obd1 conversion harness there like $40. I dont know about the manifold for obd1 but i think you can use the z6 manifold no problem.

Just like the D16Z6 ecu, the head is stamped P28.
If you are planning to turbo go with the Z6 head, if all motor get a Y8 head.
Just do a little bit of research and you'll gain more knowledge.

your easiest bet is to get a y8 head and intake manifold from an automatic y8. Should be easy to find and won't be that much different than a y8 for your intents and purposes.

Re: D16Y8, What head is best?
D16z6 has a larger combustion chamber
d16z6 = 34.60 cc
d16y8 = 32.80 cc
my guess you will make more compression out of a y8 then a z6 head, but compression isn't everything......flow is the key for power

To be honest swapping the tranny out from an ex/si hatch will make more of a difference than by swapping the head and adding vtec, you can also install a new clutch while you are in there for peace of mind.

wow, so since og(being me) cant get to the computer everyday bc of my job i get dissed for this?? lol Just playin.
So anyhow, i was looking at the vtec head and on the front side above the exhaust manifold there is a casting that says p08, so would that mean i have the y8 head then??

Re: D16Y7 - What head is best?
Well, so with all the thread jacking and such aside....
The head pictured is the y8 head, correct?? And so to run this head on the car i would have to get the obd2-obd1 conversion harness, run a vtec wire and im pretty much set right?? Oh and is the y7 intake manifold better than the one on the vtec head??
Thanks guys, any advice would help.

Re: D16Y7 - What head is best?
cool, so i have the z6 head. Cool, i do have the p28 ecu. Dont know if it is any good, but i think it is. It is non chipped to my knowledge, no case cover top but thats easy to get. An d from what i have been told the trans is out of either an ex or eg si. I want to get a hondata chip for the ecu. Is there any wiring differences that i need to do to get the obd1 to work on the vtec head besides the conversion harness???
