d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

I have a 1997 EK with a stock d16y7 in it currently, I'm looking to build my current motor or swap to a z6. What are some good HP builds for the two? Trying to stay SOHC because it's my daily driver and I want to keep SOHC builds alive.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

None. Keep BOTH stock. Horsepower and D-series is an oxymoron.

d series, the expensive way to go slow.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

I have seen some decent D16z6 Builds put out some good power before.

Doubtful. Maybe your definition of power is different than mine.

Don't get me wrong, it's no B- Series, but I have seen a D series build yank.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Again, doubtful. If you personally know of anyone that has one of these maybe you need to ask what was done to it.

You can make about 130-140hp relatively easy. Anything after that gets real costly real fast.

I'm not trying to make a track car out of it, just want to get a bit more power out of a daily driver to have some fun.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Really? What's your budget look like? Because unless you're willing to spend some coin the "power" you get out of these N/A is pretty pathetic.

I have YET to see you name a horsepower figure.

Here. This guy dropped a mint and only made 140whp. So I guess I'll have to revise that 130-140hp estimate to be lower for the future.
https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-civic-del-sol-1992-2000-1/my-big-build-thread-d-series-hybrid-1717242/

I estimate for what he paid you could have put together a decent entry level turbo kit.

If you want to go a little faster maybe swap out your transmission for an EX. Otherwise you have 3 choices, leave it stock, boost or swap.

what? D series is the cheapest engine to get parts for... and it wont be slow if you FI it

The OP didn't mention FI.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Honestly, I'm new to the Honda scene, but I know I want to stay SOHC just due to the fact that it's my daily driver and I'm putting 75 miles a day on it just getting back and forth to work. So, any SOHC build would be helpful.

As far as naming HP, I don't know what the spec's were on the SOHC builds I have seen, so I can't name anything without being sure.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Boost is your only option. Stock z6/y8s can handle up to 200hp if they've been taken care of. More power will require bottom end building. The y8 block is generally considered stronger than the z6 (I've only read this through research I have no personal experience with it though). Z6 is OBD1 and is easier to build for boost.

Ds can make decent power, but only with forced induction.

Disregard grumpy. If you want power on a Dseries Just Add boost. Cheap fun power.

grumblemarc 07-16-2012 10:25 AM

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

You need to know what the power goal is you're building for otherwise all you're doing is buying parts that may or may not work.

Pick power goal, work backwards from there. Not the other way around.

Er what? Check the links in my sig. Then go back and read. I told him he needed to boost it.

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

So, to paraphrase this whole thread. I should just build the bottom end and boost my current engine?

grumblemarc 07-16-2012 10:29 AM

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Boost it yes. Whether the bottom end needs to be built is all dependent on what? Your horsepower goals.

As I said before, I really don't know what HP goal I'm shooting for due to the fact that I don't know much about the engine or it's capabilities. Would 200 with boost and a built bottom end be doable or is that just crazy?

If I bought this, it would just bolt on and I would be good to go? Sorry, as I said before I'm 100% new to this whole process.

Mitchness 07-16-2012 10:46 AM

Re: d16y7 vs d16z6 Builds

Turbos are anything but "bolt on". They are an involved build that even with the most economical of routes will still cost at least $1200-$1500.

Are you kidding me with that Craigslist junk? It's not that easy. The turbo kit is only ONE THIRD of a turbo build. The second is fuel/engine management (injectors, fuel pump, CROME, Hondata, Neptune, etc.) and the third is the tune (not basemap).
Read ALL of this. TWICE. Before you even think about buying a single part.

Yikes, I have set aside $1000 for parts today, if I buy that kit off craigslist what else would I have to purchase? I'm reading that link as we speak.

Are you not listening? I said not to buy a single part until you know what you are doing. Right now you do not.

You really are a grumpy son of a bitch, obviously I wouldn't be on this forum if I knew what I was doing, looking for some helpful advice rather than bashing me and/or saying how dumb I am.

I have $1000 right now that I want to purchase parts with, now, if you could recommend some parts that would be helpful. Otherwise I'm just going to randomly search for parts online and buy everything I can at the moment without knowing if I need it or not.
