Default D16Y7 randomly dies? help please!

So, my D16Y7, has a weird problem. At points when I'm driving, or when I first start it up, it randomly dies. The problem is a little more complicated though I think, as it does not have a certain pattern. I will start up my car, and immediately it will die, start it up again, dies again, and it will repeat this process (sometimes like 15 times) till it fires up and stays running then I drive just like normal. Or in another situation, I will be driving down the highway, or in town just lightly cruising and then it will all of sudden die. What could this be? I changed my fuel filter, spark plugs, and use frequent fuel system cleaner, as well as change the oil way before its due with full synthetic. Any help?

My car does this too, but it only happens once, sometimes twice.

First items to consider:

1) Main relay
2) Fuel pump
3) Distributor (cap, rotor, coil, igniter)

There is no check engine light. Do you think it could be the fuel pump? and what is my main relay?

The main relay controls the fuel pump and fuel injector circuits.

It's an electrical relay located to the right of the glove box, which must be removed to access.

Avoid replacing parts unnecessarily ($$$) by referring to the service manuals for details about testing the relay with a multimeter.

Ok so basically I get the proper voltage or something that signifies its working and I can eliminate that out of the question?

As the problem is somewhat intermittent, perform each of the electrical tests multiple independent times. Getting an abnormal reading from any test would indicate a bad main relay. The multimeter used in the latter tests can also be used to test the coil and to perform ICM/igniter input tests. If no problem is found, then measure the fuel pressure to test whether the fuel pump may be faulty.

Consult the service manual for specific details.

Ok thanks man you've been a lot of help. If I took my car for a mechanic to do these tests, about how much would he charge me? I just don't know very much about electrical parts of cars

I charge $60 for a diagnostic test.

This sounds like a fuel filter problem to me. Has this been changed out yet?

Checked your distributer yet ? Maybe the contacts are on their way out. There could pssibly be a blockage in your fuel line ? Just cause you replaced the filter doesn't mean the lines are clear. Another thing, check your gas cap, i've seen this happen, the cap won't release pressure or "vent" and kind of air lock your tank. Just a few things to look into.

Crank Position Sensor possibly acting up? Check the connector going to it, make sure its plugged in, if so, test the sensor to see if its giving a signal.

bump... sorry i haven't responded for awhile, i've just been really busy. distributer is fine, crank position sensor is fine, and my car does not vibrate unusually at idle. lately its been doing it more than usual. its been pretty hot here as well around 30 degrees so i'm wondering if that could have anything to do with it. today i was driving, turned a corner and right as i was shifting into 2nd it stalled like i've been telling you guys and when i turned the key to start it back up it made a loud grinding noise? what on earth could that be? it started up and died immediately like 6 times before it didn't stall and i could drive. please help guys i'm lost
