Default D16Y7 into 93 CIVIC EX

Ok, so I thought I could put my JDM D15B VTEC Head onto my newly purchased D16Y7 from a 97 Civic DX, but for some reason it would only crank, backfire, and not start. I used my intake manifold so I wouldn't need to do any wiring mods. I thought it would crank right up but nothing. So I put the original head back on along with my D15B IM and figured out since it was a non-VTEC head that I couldn't use my Dizzy from the VTEC head. My questions are, i've heard that the 97 D16Y7s are OBD2 and my car is OBD1. Is that true? and if so, what ECU should I use? I believe I have either the P28 or P08 from the JDM D15B, but they are both set up for VTEC and not non-VTEC. But if i'm using my JDM D15B Intake Manifold, Inj., O2 Sensor, etc., The motor should run as an OBD1 motor right, and I would be able to use the ECU that is in my car already. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Your car is OBD-I. The Y7 being is 97 is OBD-IIA.

If you want to run the VTEC head, it shouldn't be that hard, same as a mini-me.

If you want to run the Y7 head, then you should use a chipped ECU with a stock Y7 map. That will be cheaper than pointlessly changing the car to OBD-II. Using the Y& map, you'll need to use Y7 injectors. That means you'll need to rewire the injector clips with OBD-II clips.

So what you should do, is buy a new head gasket, a Helms, and put the VTEC head on the Y7 block. Using your IM you shouldn't have to rewire anything. Use the P28, and make sure you set the timing correctly. The Y7 runs off 12* whereas the pre-96 D's run off 16*. Also, if the JDM D15B VTEC cam gear is the same as a Z6, you need to set it like you would on the D15, not D16. D16 UP will be at a 90* angle to the horizontal surface of the head. D15 will be slightly off of that.

Hey thanks for all the information. What do you mean about the timing being 12* and 16*? I'm not too sure about that. Also, I used the D16Y7 Timing Belt because the D15B one seemed short and would've fit on there tight even if I could've gotten it on. What would I need to do if I wanted to just use the D16Y7 motor as a complete in my car with my D15B IM? Anything else? Also, will any non-VTEC dizzy fit to the D16Y7 head? Thanks a lot!

Base timing. On the Y7, when you have the TDC mark lined up on the crank pulley, it is at 12*. Use Y7 timing belt, or Y8 or Z6 or Y5, all three are the same. If you want to use the whole Y& with D15 IM, just do it like its a Z6 block. Same thing. Use Y7 dizzy and repin it with an OBD-I connector. Or swap the guts from the D15 dist into the Y7 case and you won't have to repin.

Ok, well i'm still not sure what the 12* actually means when we're talking timing. I get where you're saying to put it. When I had the JDM D15B VTEC Head on there. I used that head, IM, Distributor, Line from the water pump to therm., I alligned the cam gear at the up position and the pistons were already at TDC. I didn't check the crank pulley and where it was at because I figured if the pistons were at their highest point than that would be the position they needed to be at. The head was torqued down, Y7 timing belt installed, everything connected. I went to fire and it only cranked than backfired. Could it still be off timing? Also, that VTEC head should work on that block right? and if i'm using the same ECU. I know people have done this same swap and got it to run correctly, I was a little surprised when it didn't fire because I thought I did everything correctly. I know i'm asking a lot of questions and if you could try answering them all, that would be GREATLY appreciated. I am grateful for all the info. Really. Thanks!

Crank pulley TDC mark needs to be lined up. I did a Z6 head on my Y7 block and had to do a bit of trouble shooting.

If you use the head, it should be pretty straight foward since you're already OBD-I. Use the D15 head, IM, dist, ECU, and water neck (from water pump to thermo, D15 should have two nipples on it whereas the Y7 only has one). You'll need to put a 16* mark on the CP (use a protractor and white out 4* past 12*).

No problem on the questions, I asked a lot when I ran into problems, and I love to help out a fellow East TNer.

What's up. So I just wanted to tell you that I put the VTEC head on and tried timing it to the best of my knowledge and what you told me and got it running. Although it seems not right just yet, i'm still doing some minor adjustments. But I just wanted to let you know. I got further this time then before. Hopefully I can get it to 100%. Thanks for all your help. Johnson City isn't too far, if you ever want. Give me a shout and we'll meet up or something and hit the city.

Just put a timing light on it and adjust from there. I won't be out much as I have quite a few builds going on.

Yeah but I don't know how to do it with a timing light even if I did have one. I just adjust it by one tooth back or forward.

Thats not how you do it. Go to Advanced and pick up a Haynes manual. Not the greatest, but it'll show you how.

I got the Haynes manual and it says to use a timing light. I'll just go get a timing light.
