D16y7 Exhaust manifold Q and A's
Hey i had a couple questions for you guys . Recently i heard and exhaust leak on my car and when i took off the heat shield i found that the manifold was cracked .... i was thinking or ripping that huge cat from the front of the car and puttin a d16y8 exhaust setup on mine but i talked to one of my buddies and he sayed he tried it and it would always throw a code and he couldent get rid of the engine light .... any ideals ??? i was gonna use a d15b7 manifold with a universal honda cat ! would that be ok ??? thanks guys

You just need a ex header (or aftermarket) and a obd2 cat. You also need to extend the second o2 sensor so itll reach the new cat and you should be fine.

you will run into O2 sensor problem. The stock D16Y7 manifold with the cat got 2 bungs for 2 O2 sensor. The Y8 manifold (will mate with your existing exhaust system, but will eliminate the CAT) got only 1 bung for the primary o2 sensor. Leaving the secondary O2 sensor without a place to mount it. With some modification to your exhaust it can be done.

Are you throwing any codes yet? Cracked exhaust manifolds is a common problem and I threw several codes.
Actually when I had the crack manifold I found the extended free warranty that Honda had for those years, im not sure if it included Canada. Anyway the warranty had to do something with the EPA making Honda change the cracked exhaust manifold (emissions problem) for FREE. It comes with some other free emission maintenance too, depends.
Search online or if theres a nearest Honda, ask.

Just buy some aftermarket headers.

k, if i was to get an aftermarket header for my d16y7, i'm looking at a cheap used greddy header, but it's for a d16y8. so in all, this would work, but what needs to be done? just working with the o2 sensors and cat? (we have aircare here, so a cat is needed -_-)

i'm running an ex exhaust manifold and cat on my 99 hatch with a y7 in it no problems. like said before all you need is an ex exhaust manifold (or header) and cat, all thats left is to extend the wire to the o2 sensor.

hey thanks alot guys ... what kind of cat did u guys use in your setup ? an ex cat ? would a univesal cat work ? and i guess high flow is out of the question in Ontario ... emission purpus ... do all d series manifold work ? Thanks in advance

Just pick up a D16y8 Header and Cat and you'll be fine but yet again you have to modd your b-pipe due to it being to long...or just pick up a good D16y7 header...

yea I think there would be, just none that you will notice, you won't go like "holy crap man! since i changed this exhaust my car hauls like 10x faster now"

i have no idea how strict emissions are in ontario, but that should definately be on your mind. other than that, an ex exhaust mani and cat would do fine, should just bolt on. depending on your future goals, you could get a high-flow cat and have that welded on, and you could also go with an aftermarket header. good luck

i'd look for a 2000 ex (d16y8) manifold its a tubular exhaust manifold and better than the cast ones from the earlier y8 and other d series motors imho. thats what i'm running on my y7 along with a factory ex cat.

hey another quick lil question ! does only d-series manifold fit on a d ? or can i put like a b series on it ? cuz my buddy has alot of honda engines laying around like a b20a , h23 ,b18a ,d16a6 , d15b7 like i have a selection but dunno what fits !

sorry d to d, b to b, h to h. u can't tun a b series exhaust manifold on a d-series. he has a d16a6 manifold and a d15b7 as well, they will bolt up but you will still need a cat.

just get a cat for an ex it will bolt right up, that universal one isn't a direct bolt on.

My wife's 98 LX has that crack too. I called the stealer, but they said the emissions "extended" double-secret warranty only lasted until 80K miles so we were dead in the water.
I've always thought of throwing some JB-weld on there to see if that would seal it... otherwise, we're used to the CEL being on, I don't even notice it anymore.

You can use the Y8, you will have a CEL. To get rid of it, just have an o2 bung welded onto your exhaust after the cat (you'll need to have a cat put on). Or convert to OBD-I.
I've run the Y7, Y7 open, Y8 open, SMSP big tube, and SMSP big tube race exhaust on my stock Y7.
Y7 just sucks, though it has better low end than the Y8.
Y8 is nice and sounds better open than the Y7. Has a little more top end.
SMSP open is ungodly loud, sounds like an F1 in a way. A lot more power than either of the Y's.
SMSP w/ SMSP race exhaust has even more power than w/o the exhaust. A load more of low end as well, my car got ***** when I put the exhaust on. Louder than most N1 exhaust but deeper. Drones like crazy. Needs to be tuned though.
