D16Y Engine swap with D15B
Hi Everyone,
I have a 1994 Civic with a D16Y1 engine (vtec). Can anyone tell me if i can swap out the engine with a D15B without any problems?
Will the engine just drop straight in to the car without any modifications and are there any extra parts i would need to swap out to get this all working?
Thanks
Steven

I don't know much a about that engine, but what ECU is in it? Thats what is going to be important in telling whether it will be compatible fuel maps.
Other than that the swaps you buy generally have all the bolt on stuff so it should just be a drop in, but like I said I don't know if the d16y1 has anything funny on it that would make it a challenge, post some pics maybe?

The reason i need to do an engine swap is because im currently getting loads of white smoke come out of the exhaust which i have been told is the piston rings. The engine has done over 230,000km and its cheaper to do an engine swap than a rebuild. I cant find a replacement D16Y engine for the car but was told that a D15B should go in.
If thats not the case it would be great if anyone could suggest another engine that i could hunt for which would be more suitable with least amount of work needing to be done for the swap. I will be getting a mechanic to do the work.
All this car is used for these days is for short trips to the train station and back so i can get to work so the replacement engine doesnt have to be anything special as long as it works.

Re: (CustomCivic)
Looking at the pics yes an obd1 D15B vtec will drop right in. But i'm really confused about the D16Y1 thats in there now, here in north america we never got a D16YX engine until '96 and as such they are all OBD2, so either australia got Y engines before us or someone swapped that engine in.

that's weird. its actually my girlfriends car, she bought it second hand and is not sure if the engine was swapped before she bought it. what engine would you expect to see in there?
is the P28 ecu ok to use for the D15B?

I was thinking more along the lines of a D16Z6 or whatever the austrailian equivilant of that block code is.

Yeah, thats what i'm running my D15B vtec with, ideally it should be chipped with D15B vtec maps, but i've never bothered to chip mine and it runs great, doesn't run rich or anything. Those D15B vtec are great little engines btw, especially considering how little they cost, excellent value IMO.
