D16a? P2j-1 head? Well i got an answer
I recently had to order a d16y8 engine for my 98 civic ex automatic I have a p2p ecu... I've been racking my head over this for a while now cause when the engine got here from Japan it was a d16a block with a p2j-1 head I was really worried about if it was going to work or not but turns out it does just fine this specific engine is out of a Honda domani in Japan my p2p ecu works with it and my d16y8 wiring harness plugged into everything just fine....their was one thing I had to change though and that was my intake manifold lucky for me I kept the one I had from my previous engine and it hooked up just fine cause the way the Mani was on the one they sent me wouldn't hook up to my fuel line for my fuel rail... I've had the engine in for a week now at the date of this post and drove around quite a bit already I still haven't had no codes or problems with anything and vtec works fine too... no it's not a 3 stage vtec it's just normal mine at least... it seems I lucked out from the horror stories I've heard but I haven't had a problem so far I will give up dates if anyone needs just IM me...

Are you the guy who posted pics of an engine and everyone trolled you? If so, then I'd like to apologize.
I knew right off the bat it wasn't 3 stage VTEC, but I insisted it was in my first two posts hoping that @TomCat39 would correct me, but he instead allowed two other morons in that thread to continue stating it was for sure a 3 stage head from a D15B.
I'm glad you got the car running, I'm always happy to see Hondas drive to the junkyard under their own power. I hope the junkyard pays you well for you car when you make it there. Good luck with your future endeavors.

alright, homeskillet. i agree that the head is NOT 3 stage vtec. HOWEVER, it is also not from a Japanese car. three, count them, three Honda engines have roller rockers (like the setup you posted). 1- d15z1, which is unlikely. 2- d16b5 which is EVEN MORE unlikely (civic GX, super rare, not even sure if compatible), and 3- the very common d16y5, found in the 96-00 civic with the casting code you posted. NO OTHER HEAD HAS ROLLER ROCKERS. your engine was pieced together by the con artist that sold it to you. will it run? yes. save for the pistons, the y8, y5, and your current block are virtually identical. the problem is that the stock y8 ecu is not programmed correctly for the head, given the roller rockers, different cam, and other variables. they installed the y8 intake manifold onto it, making it plug and play, but it will never be right.
forgot to add: yes, you are correct that the d16a came in the Domani. problem is, the head code for a d16a is p08. the p08 head did NOT have roller rockers. you do/ don't crap up the tech area with misinformation.

Don't the K20s have roller rockers?
Maybe he has an RSX head?

Note: Our famous resident troller slomo is well...trolling. slomo can be ignored on this topic, although I think he was genuine when he posted this:
Thank you eghatch9295 for again pointing the OP in the right direction. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."
