D16 Transmission makes grinding noise when shifting to 5th and reverse. Help
I have a 94 del sol SI. When my car is parked and i first start the motor and if the first gear i shift into is reverse, the tranny makes a loud grinding noise for a second and then it slips into reverse. After in reverse no more grinding, just at the point where i am pulling the shift **** down towards reverse. When it is grinding, i can feel the vibrations in the shift ****. This same problem happens sometimes when shifting into 5th while driving, ESPECIALLY at higher RPMS. It keeps happening even though i release the clutch all the way. Can someone please tell me what might be the cause of this. im planning on changing my clutch, TOB, and my ISB but before i do it, i would like to know if there are other things to do to solve my problem while i have the tranny pulled out so i dont have to go throught the hassel of pulling it out again. please help. thanks

Thats normal, reverse isn't synchronized like the forward gears are. You should shift into a forward gear first and then into reverse to prevent this grinding. 5th shouldn't grind though, may be a syncro issue.

Yeah, you should shift into 4th to synchronize it before dropping it into reverse.

@ OP:
You shouldn't be putting it into reverse b4 1st, that's counterintuitive, if you need to back up to get out of wherever you're parked, put it in a high forward gear (ie. 4th), then put it in reverse.
I would say a synchro issue, but reverse doesn't have synchros, but the weird thing is that 5th and reverse are on the same countershaft in the trans - so I wonder if it's a possible problem with that. Not sure, not a trans expert.

Question though:
I'm dying to know where you're shifting outta "high RPM" in 4th. I'm assuming that puts you around 150mph?

DX tranny would put it at around 120mph, shifting at 7,200RPM, Si tranny should be even earlier. I was young and foolish once.

Hmm... My DX tranny hits/maxes out at 110mph in 3rd gear, and that's at 6,800 RPM.
My D16Y7+DX tranny maxes like this :
1st = 38mph @ 6,800 RPM
2nd = 70mph @ 6,800 RPM
3rd = 110mph @ 6,800 RPM
4th = cuts off at 118 MPH because of speed governer, but when it cuts its like at 5,800 - 5,900 RPM, and still would continue picking up if the governer weren't there. No way 4th could max out at 120. Maybe at least 130.
I also just saw another car on youtube with stock D16Y7 as well and had the same exact numbers as I do

Re: D16 Transmission makes grinding noise when shifting to 5th and reverse. Help (sageuvagony)
I run a JDM D15B vtec in a '94 sedan with a DX tranny, 4th will take me to 197km/h so right around 120mph, thats at around 7000 - 7200 rpm, who knows hows accurate the stock gauges are at that speed and rpm. It essentially tops out at 197km/h it doesn't cut out, thats just as fast it will go, 5th just lowers the rpms from 7 grand to about 5 grand. I wound it out a couple of times after i swapped the engine in on some dark deserted straight roads late at night.
