yes there are sohc 1.6 vtec engines.
d16z6 is one of them. I dunno the rest but do a sohc vtec search in both archives and recent and compare them to the d#'s stamped on your block. Youll find them

there is the sohc d16z6 on the 92-95 model civics and the d16y8 for the 96-2000 civics not sure about the newer models. what the engine code is ... but these to are the most common sohc vtec engines and most of them say vtec on the valve cover and has a vtec soleinoid on the engine behind the valve cover on the left side corner if u are looking at the car. and the gauges on the inside of the car. would show a redline of 7200 rpms these are all ways of figuring this out. if the car is sohc vtec or not.

What trim level is it? if it is ex then its vtec. Also if you look at the engine code it will say d16y8. Also look for the vtec sol on the back of the valve cover.

There is VTEC, but it feels a little weak. His car is 2000, so it is D16Y8.

On the single cam engines, VTEC only affects the intake side, so it's not nearly as noticable as one the dual cam engines.

In order to have VTEC, there must be a way to activate it, right?

So....look near the passenger side of the head for the VTEC solenoid.
