Default D16 motor swap

im swapping a D16 motor into a CX.. and im tryin to take the axles off of the D16 motor, and i got half of them out, the half which being the side that goes into the tranny... and i ran into some issues. I cannot get the other half out of the spindle part. Is the axle apart of the spindle? or is it just being a dirty ****, and wont come out? lol. Please HELP!

Thanks!
Mike/Kate

Use a ball joint separator if you have one available and pry from the tranny/axle mating point and you're good... The axles look like this, one end goes into the hub, the other into the tranny...

the part on the spindle, is taken off with a 1 1/4 socket and can be quite the P.I.T.A but what I do is remove the tie-rod ball joint on one of the control arms, and that way I can pull the complete assembly outwards and force the axles shaft inwards, either with a hammer or whatever's available and that always seems to work... If it's really stuck spray some PB Blaster in there and than try, GL...

ps - this is always a good helper too, can be rented at autozone for FREE..!!

did you drop the control arm? and undo the axle nut?
if you already did just grab a pry bar or a big flat head and it should come out with some prying.

Yeh I took my lower control arms out in the front so I could swing the rotor/brake/hub out from the car and get the axle out.

Just take the big-*** nut off, and bang on the axle end til it comes out of the rotor/brake/hub part it goes into.

penetrating lubricant and a big-*******-hammer. Bang it like there's no tomorrow, but make sure you don't mushroom out the end of the axle to the point where you can't get the nut back on there. If I remember correctly, the axle isn't threaded all the way to the end so you can't screw up the threads but if you beat it all too much you might flare the metal on the end of the axle shaft where the nut goes on.

if you dont drop the controll arm the axle wont come out.

heat what up?? just grab a impact and the axle nut will come off.

i dont have an impact gun thats powerful enough for that haha.. its messed.. i have a 4 1/2 gallon compressor, but my impact gun can barely get lugnuts off.. so that would be useless.. and i'd have to heat up the axle nut, because its rusted to ****, and its a bitch to get off.. i have a wrench and a 2 and 1/2 foot pole for leverage.. but yea.

maybe try and borow one? or rent a elctric one.

I used a 3ft breaker bar and impact sockets - even then I had to recruit midgets to help pull down on that breaker bar. But when the nut popped loose, atleast it wasn't my knuckles that got busted.

good luck

a nice big breaker bar was my friend throughout the whole process. try soaking the axles with some pb blaster. .. i think axles are around $60 new... keep messing with it. u wont loose anything if u keep trying. get someone big to help you. you said this is off of the parts car right? if it breaks then it doesnt matter

nah im forgetting the axles.. shes buying new ones.. they are rusty anyways.. i have another question though, totally disregarding the swap.

The engine that has the blown head gasket. It heats up way too often, and the rad fan turns on, but it doesnt turn on when it the temperature gauge goes to the 'H'.. the fuse is fine.. could this be the thermostat?

although that didnt matter, because i am pretty strong.. so no matter what i did, i had a 4 foot bar for leverage.. as hard as i pulled up or pushed down, with people standing on the car, the tire just spun on the ground.. i did the mistake of taking the axle out of the tranny.. but w/e.. they are kinda rusty anyways.. they would've needed some sanding/painting before i would've put them on the other car.

did you take a punch and hammer to knock the tab out thats on the nut? my workplace has air so using an air gun on mine was no issues and came right off.

i prolly don't have to say this, but it helps to hold the brake too when you're trying to crack that nut. And yeh, there's a lock-key in the nut that you have to bend out with a hammer.

Find a friend with airtools, you'll be surprised how easily it comes off with the push of a button in all it's hydraulic glory.

lol well i've bent the locks out of the nuts on the parts car.. but they're too rusted on.. the axles are rusty anyways, so new ones will be bought.

also i've bent the locks off the silver civic and sprayed them with liquid film.. the ones on the silver car look almost new, so i dont think they'll give me trouble...... hopefully lol

i'm very proud of you. excellent work. wonderful job.

hold the brake when you crack the nut, and when you crack it don't put a slow amount of force on it. Like put the breaker bar on it, then kick the bar end to pop the nut free. If you try to slowly turn it off, it may give you more trouble than a sharp blow.

well i ordered new axles for the civic, but theres a stupid core charge.. so now im frustrated lol... i've bent that little tab out, and it still doesnt turn at all.. i've sprayed it with penetrating fluid, i've heated them up... my only option is to cut them off. Any other advice?

I've used a 4 foot steel pole for leverage, and i bent it, trying to get these stupid nuts off. Also i tried taking the silver civics axle nuts off, and they're the same.
