Default d16 good enough swap for my needs?

My CX motor is just about to die out so I am in the process of choosing a swap for my hatch.

Here's my reasons why I'm choosing what I am choosing.

I'm a poor soon to be college student.

I don't race or getting intimidated when I do because I been in 3 near death wrecks.

Its good on gas and has enough power to move atleast 5 people around?

I wanna put a jdm d15b in my hatch for all the reasons above. It shoudl ahve enough power to move a 2000lbs hatch around especially on the freeway. It is good on gas. I don't plan on racing because I am tramutized. I would like to do a b18b swap cause of the TQ on those things but they are more expnsive vs. D series.

Can anyone reccommend a swap?

I also plan on doing i/h/e and chipped ecu for more power.

It sounds to me that you already made up your mind. I have had both d15b vtec and b18b in my car. I tell you what though that d15b vtec engine was a strong and pretty snappy motor. Some agree and disagree, but I think its better the a d16z6, but that just me. Check out hmotorsonline.com I think you can get the whole d15b vtec swap for like $600. The only thing is, is if you want vtec to kick you have to wire its up in your wiring harness. Do the d15 you'll be happy with it for now expecally after rolling with a cx motor.

d15b for the win, stock d15b makes more power than a d16, plus if you really want that extra few mpg, it comes in an economy vtec version. no need for the b series if your not gonna make it fast, stick with the straight swap. also the d15b will run on an unchipped p28 ecu, so u dont have to mess around with a different ecu until you get tuned

yep the d15bvtec is a great motor i have it in my 93 coupe and with all the stuff i carry around in my trunk and back seat , that thing still moves quick!!!! for some reason they seem to be quicker than my 7 friends z6 and y8's....

the d15b and the z6 are both good motors and in a cx they will be quick. i'd just get which ever one is cheapest and be done with it.

I have to figure out about smog here now.

about modding a d15b....

would it be worth it to stick a header in there? I know SOHC gains are minimal.

I want to stick a Skunk SOHC chipped ECU but I dont know if it is safe? Thats cool that I use a stock p28 though....gives me tiem before I can chip it.

Another thing, what other brands can I use for chipping?

P28 doesn't run JDM D15B VTEC to full potential.

Also, it doesn't have VTEC-E, the EK D15B has the 3 stage VTEC, with the VTEC-E, and then normal VTEC. The EG version only has the normal VTEC.

hmm i guess I woudl have to use the P08 ECU.

Can I chip it with a race program? or just use a chipped P28 for the d15b?

Get the P28 chipped to the stock P08 program.

"Race" programs are just added timing and fuel, they will **** your MPG, and nothing else.

i was thinking chipped ECU for added power. I know my MPG will go down but any estimate of how much HP will be increased?

I think that mostly depends on what is done to the motor. Stock motor w/ i/h/e probably not so much added power.

ah I see.

I plan on i/ e for sure but does a header really help at all? Everything will be carb legal.

Ever thought of a f22b1 (94-97) accord with sohc vtec? The motor can be bought for around 400-600 bucks and has more hp and more tq for about the same amount of money as the d15b.

You need H22A mounts to put in an F22B. If you buy the mounts, you might as well buy the H22.

Here is what I did when I had my d15bvtec (the eg version with obd1) When I got the motor and tranny it came with a p08 ecu. I had a four to one dc header/hollowed out cat/and full skunk2 exhaust. I had a skunk2 intake manifold with aem cold air intake. For a clutch I had an act with lightend flyweel. msd wires and a lightened crank pully. Now whats wierd is that motor is rated for 130hp at the flywheel. When I dyno tested it the dyno machine said I was kicking out 134 at the wheels. Believe it or not it a true story. So I dont know. I had fun with my sohc when I had it, but after a while if you got the money you'll probly swap to a dual cam.
