the Z1/P07 combo is good for fuel milage, but power will never be it's strong suit.

There is someone on here that turbo'd a Z1 with decent results. But you'd be a lot better off with a Z6.

1. It's VTEC. Not vtech, v-tek, v-tech, v-tec, so on and so forth.

2. That engine is made for economy. With the mated VX transmission, it's only going to get you from point A to point B with minimal gas consumption. Some people have turboed it, but it's all up to you. Just don't expect to be running 12s anytime soon.

If you do decide to work on it, swap out the tranny ASAP. The gearing is soooo long.

I read about one build up one it, and they almost managed to get a D16Z6 power out of it, after a total rebuild, pistons, headwork, rods, everything. Boost could be an alternative, but don't count on making any whooping power.

There are some good things about the block - it has a better r/s ratio than any of the usdm D series engines (at least from 88-04). It also has a little more beef to the rod than any of the other usdm 1.5's. The head isn't built for high flow rates though, and would be difficult to get that point. Now, if you could swap on a Z6 head and change to pistons that would give you a decent compression ratio then it would be very similar to the D15B JDM, and could be a nice performer. But, unless you want to dig that deep into the Z1, the Z6 would be an easier starting point and it's still cheap and easy to swap into the VX chassis.

My $.02

Do you know anything else about the z1 civicminded?

Im looking for a solid building block for my 1.5 turbo setup. I dont want to do a z6 setup, im lookin for a 1.5.

Are there any piston options for the z1? Im looking for a really low compression setup, b/c the z6 head is gona bump it up a bit.

just swap out the tranny, head and intake manifold from a z6/y8 and use an ex/si engine harness and run a p28... it will feel like a new car... i did this to mine but i had all the parts laying around... i dont think it would be worthwhile to search and buy them all... you could just buy a z6/y8 swap

You Should not run a p28 on a z1... The Z1's vtec is designd to kick in at 2500 rpm. If you run a p28, you will be running a 12 valve engine all the way to 5000 (or whatever vtec is) and thats no good.

first off the z1 is 16 valve anyway and when i had that head on i still revved to 6500 or so for quite awhile with no problems so dont post if you dont know what your talking about

I do know what im talking about. What i was tryin to say is that the z1 head is designed to be a 12 valve engine untill vtec kicks in, thats where the VTEC-E engine differs from the other SOHC vtec setups.

I just didnt see you mentiond the z6 head swap

swap the vx tranny to si/ex tranny and p28 ecu. The VX have no problem running a p28 ecu at all. The vtec will kick in @5,000rpm and you will feel it, but nothing near a doch vtec.

My Stock vx with full cat-back run 17.9. And later upgrade the transmission to 92 EX. It ran a 16.8.

Don't expect to 12's from a vx. Hell it may be slow but at least i still have fun driving it.
