Re: D15B variation identifiers
There are many versions of the D15B so let me just make it easy for you, you basically got the D15B2/7 version of it. Biggest tell tale sign is the spark plug holes are on the intake side of the head (all D-Series VTEC SOHC and all 96-00 regardless of trim level have the spark plug holes on the exhaust side of the head). That plate is a block off plate for the mechanical fuel pump that was once there. That is an indication (I believe) that this was originally set up for a carburetor .

Re: D15B variation identifiers
That D15B is the carb version.
It has the block off plate where the mechanical oil pump attaches to and you can see the lobe on the cam that operated the mechanical oil pump.
The carb version is a non vtec and it's the equivalent of the D15B7 head as far as I could tell.

Re: D15B variation identifiers
If that is the original block to that head, then the block is exactly the same as the D15B2 and D15B7. Which means it's pretty weak on the bottom end. Both Boost and Higher RPM is going to be very hard on that bottom end.
The JDM D15B vtec engine has a block more in line with the D16A6 and D16Z6 with larger journal sizes and thicker rods etc.
Really, you best option would be a different engine altogether.
The head could be fun if you want to go back to a carb setup with dual carbs. I think webber made some honda carbs that were beefy. But I would still recommend a different block.
