Default d15 backfires/hesitates/stuggles (umm...gargling engine)

i have a 93 civic dx hatch with original d15 nd trans. tha car has just over 230k miles on it. i have noticed that oil started to appear over most of the block nd tha back part of the valve cover; i cant tell where its leaking from because it cover at least 75% of the block, but #1 guess would be head gasket. just recently car drove fine in tha day but by nite when i was about to head out again the car started stuggleing to accelerate: it would hesitate by making a gargling noice (umm i guess its like a series of short backfires). the next day i put a quart of oil in nd the issuse was still there but not as bad as before.

ok so when i hit tha gas the car does the stuggleing/gargling thing mainly in mid-range rpm but does occur at low & high from time 2 time. this hesitation cause the car to boggle a bit.

wut could be the problem?? my guess head gasket is goin....and a note on the head gasket: it blew less than 20k miles ago allowing coolant into combustion chambers. completely cleaned nd scraped old material off before new gasket, nd no warpage of head or block were visible so i didnt get the head or block machined

thanx for any help in advance

you could be right.

clean down the block and try figure out where the leak is coming from. Or even quickly do a compression test.. check your oil for emulsification also.

best place to start i would think.

Check to see if there's oil up around the valve cover gasket, if so id say thats the oil leak. I doubt its the head gasket b/c theres only around 4 oil passages i think in the block. As for the struggling, the distributor coil/igniter could be on its way out.

Do you have your plug wires on correctly and do they fit tight on the spark plugs? They could be arcing. I had a similar problem as you and it was because my **** wires were arcing!

yea my 93 hatch was doing the exact same thing a few weeks ago. turned out my spark wires weren't on correctly. I mean the car would start and accelerate but it had an annoying hesitation and backfire ever so often. Check that out too.
