D-Series Tranny Gear Swapping ?'s
I'm definitely not a pro when it comes to trannys. My thoughts are to take my 98 CX tranny and do this:
1st = EK CX 3.250
2nd = EK EX 1.909
3rd = ZC 1.346
4th = EK CX 1.172 3rd gear
5th = EK CX .702
FD = EK EX 4.250
Will everything fit ok?
I just need to get the EK EX 2nd gear and FD, and the ZC 3rd gear.
Where can I get the ZC 1.346 gear?
This setup would be perfect for what I'm wanting to do.
1st = EK CX 3.250
2nd = EK EX 1.909
3rd = ZC 1.346
4th = EK CX 1.172 3rd gear
5th = EK CX .702
FD = EK EX 4.250
Will everything fit ok?
I just need to get the EK EX 2nd gear and FD, and the ZC 3rd gear.
Where can I get the ZC 1.346 gear?
This setup would be perfect for what I'm wanting to do.

the 1.172 is actually TOO close the the 1.346 (87% rpm drop)
no point in using a cx 1st gear instead of a ex 1st, because all d-series 1st gears are the same 3.25. 1st gear and 2nd gear are integrated on the mainshaft anyways. The zc 1.346 will work, good luck finding a zc tranny. You will need to use the needle bearing for the hydro 4th gear mainshaft when putting the zc 3rd in (you'll see what I mean when you attempt)
It is best to use a zc 4th or a vx 3rd as 4th. Note, the ID of the mainshaft gears on cable 4ths and hydro 3rds needs to be modified to be used as a hydro 4th.
remember, 5th gear is actually the 5th gear ratio multiplied by the final drive ratio, just because you're at 3000rpm @ 80mph in your cx, doesn't mean that you can put a cx 5th gear in a ex transmission and still be at the same cruising rpm.
all hydro transmissions have the same 0.702 5th gear anyways, with the sole exception being the 92-95 civic si d16z6 hatchback, and the obd1 d16z6 del sol si. They have a 0.750 5th gear.

I'm starting off with a CX tranny which is why I am swapping IN EX stuff. Can I put the EX 2nd gear on a CX main shaft? Can I put the EX FD in the CX tranny?

You can't put the ex 2nd gear on the cx mainshaft, you need a ex mainshaft. You can put the ex final drive in the cx tranny, However you'll have to swap the ring gears on the differential.
EX case uses much larger bearings all throughout. All other models CX/VX/HX/DX/LX/WHATEVER use smaller bearings. You'll need to use all the cx bearings and don't get them mixed up with the ex bearings.
I just might have a ex mainshaft for sale, but it's a 92-95, which is 1.900 instead of 1.909 (you'd never know the difference anyways, as in, driving the car, nobody can tell a difference that small) However you'd need to use 92-95 synchro hubs with 96-00 sleeves on it.
I also have a vx 3rd gear that I might be willing to part out with.

Ah, nevermind, I see that you have a shop and all the tools to do so yourself.
Ironically, I couldn't fall asleep last night and I came up with this idea...
1st = 3.25
2nd = 1.782
3rd = 1.346 (dohc zc cable 3rd)
4th = 1.172 your stock 3rd as 4th

Top Gear gives 17.885 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 155.600 MPH at 8700 RPM
Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1677 RPM 40 MPH = 2236 RPM 50 MPH = 2796 RPM 60 MPH = 3355 RPM
70 MPH = 3914 RPM 80 MPH = 4473 RPM 90 MPH = 5032 RPM 100 MPH = 5591 RPM
Top Speed in 1 gear = 42.036 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4770 RPM dropping 3930 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 76.665 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 6571 RPM dropping 2129 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 101.499 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 7575 RPM dropping 1125 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 116.568 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 6518 RPM dropping 2182 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 155.600 MPH

As you can see, from 1-4 the rpm drops get tighter and tighter, and that's a good thing. As you get furter along in your gears, the more power they reduce, so this means that it becomes more beneficial as the power increases.
Yes, I did calculate with a 1.782 2nd, but I think that it would be better to have a taller 2nd that carries you further into 3rd
note: not that it really matters, but this is my 2000th post. I'm glad that it's a technical tranny post, because this is the type of stuff that I enjoy doing

Here is what I figured:
23" Slick, 4.25 FD
120 mph trap = 8368 rpm in 4th
Top speed in each gear factoring in slick expansion and shift points:
1st = 45 mph, 0-9000 rpm, 23" tire
2nd = 73 mph, 5286-8700 rpm, 23" tire
3rd = 104 mph, 6134-8500 rpm, 23.5" tire
4th = 122 mph, 7401-8500 rpm, 24" tire

The Inside Diameter of the 1.172 3rd will need to be modified to fit the synchro hub. The countershaft gear is fine, no issues there. But if you compare the machining on the 3rd gear and the 4th gear (mainshaft gears) you'll see what I am talking about.

Althought the ex 3rd gear of 1.25 is not as high as the zc 1.346, would it still be benefical to put a cx third gear in place of the 4th in my eg si tranny? I just purchased a eg cx and si tranny to play around with. With the mainshaft of the si tranny have to modifyed to accept the cx third gear?

The new solution:
Tranny - CX I have now
1st - stock 3.250
2nd - stock 1.782
3rd - EX 1.25
4th - HF 3rd 1.033
5th - stock .702
FD - SRR 4.70
Better for my setup and no need to try and source the ZC 3rd gear.

itsn't the cx thrid 1.066? Maybe instead of trying to source the hf gear you could move your thrid gear over. Or maybe the hf gear requires no trimming I'm not sure, where's bense?

92-95 cx 3rd is 1.0666, it requires modification. Can't remember which cx tranny he currently has.

I loved my hybrid cable tranny in my 89 Si. It had ZC 1/2/3, Si 4th, HF 5th, with Si FD.
I just got a 92 Civic LX and am looking forward to assembling a hybrid hydro trans for it. I got an EX trans for it, and I have the stock LX, a VX, and an HF trans to pull gears from. I need to figure out what would be a good combo.
