Default d-series - cheap, easy to find, ALL CRAP

In a post in the eg civic/del sol forum I told about how my girlfriend mis-shifted in to 2nd gear at 70+mph and messed up a bearing in my engine.. Well now every time I start the thing it knocks like hell..

I have been without a car to drive for almost a month now because I am unable to find a low mile d-series block for less than $300.. I don't know why everyone says you can buy a complete d-series engine for dirt cheap, or that they are a dime a dozen, or any of that bull crap..

If all these people are swapping to b-series, where have all the SOHCs gone?

I want to get my car running again, but I can't find a good block, or someone to buy all my turbo stuff for the price I listed.. If I could, a friend is offering me his b18b with everything for my 200k mile engine + $1000.. I guess I'm just stuck damn low ballers

I wasn't sure about that one because like he stated, it could use a minor rebuild.. my 200k mile block would be perfect with a "minor rebuild".. either way, I don't want to talk to much on this post, because it was an accidental post.. I don't want to get in trouble

300 is far less than 6-800 for a b16 long block.
then you need a tranny and a few mounts......

ECU, axles, Shift linkage, fuel pump, and a few odds and ends...

you get the idea...

it is cheaper to build a d16 vs b16 from scratch..

I've been experiencing the same problem.

Its near impossible to find a low mileage z6 and to rebuild my z6 with aftermarket parts will cost me $5244CDN.

Hey I got my DX engine with 157K on it and it run clean and doesn not burn oil or anything.. I just recently swap my B18b so don't really need it. But I want 200 for the long block.. For another 100 buck, I'll kick in the tranny and everything else i have left over for it.

Truth is, these motor are so small and cheap, people just rather keep them as a spare.

Whoa! That is an insane price!!

There are deals out there, and the d16 is without a doubt cheaper and easier to get than a b series, you just have to do the shopping.

i dont full understand gears, low the number the longer the gear is going to be.

do you have a list of top speeds in each gear?

*edit* didnt click link.

i just picked up a d16y8 with tranny ECU, A/C, and powersteering for 400. included axles too. only 70k on it

just keep an eye out. also they sell on ebay for about 200-300 bucks for the block and head. complete and running. your area might not have to many. just keep looking and youll find one.

The number is how many times the engine turns for every ONE turn of the transmission... the wheels turn THAT many times TIMES the final drive ratio...

So...

If you're at 3250RPM in first gear with a ratio of... 3.25 then the transmission is turning at 1000RPM... if that tranny has a final drive of 4.250 (tranny turns 4.25 times for every ONE turn of the wheel) then the wheels are traveling at 325.29RPM's...

Also just FYI torque is multiplied by gears... if you have a 1ft/lb motor with 10 teeth turning a 100 tooth gear... that 100 tooth gear will be putting out 100ft/lbs of torque... not sure if that math is accurate... it's just an example... I can't seem to find exactly how much it's multiplied...

To answer your question...

Long gears are gears who's ratios are FAR apart... Short gears are those that who's ratios are close together... the engine rpms drop less the less of a chang in gearing there is...

The lower the 'number' of the gear... the fewer times the engine has to turn to turn the tranny or wheels... which means less torque but more rpms.

i dont know about the torque thing, but closer gears with a higher final drive makes your engine accelerate faster and easier
