Default d series cam question-some tech

okay, i broke my cam the other day as some of you already know. i have been shopping around for a new cam. either zex or crower. i have found one of each used and they are both for the d16z6 motor. why are the manufacturer's saying that we can't use the z6 cam in the y8 head? well they actually dont say that but theu list different part numbers.

i thought most d parts were interchangeable.. i have a non - vtec cam- can i put it in my vtec head for the moment until my new cam arrives? no racing just driving..

so has anyone used a z6 cam in the y8 head? and if so anything i need to do to make it work?? thanks

The Distributor key is in a different postion from each of the engines. To use a Z6 cam in a Y8 or vise versa you need an adjustable cam gear.

Most D parts are interchangeable.
NO you cannot put a non-VTEC cam in a VTEC head.

I have a Zex Z6 cam in my Y8. He is right, you must get an adjustable cam gear and advance it about 5 degrees for it to be at a relative 0 marking for the Y8 head. Because of this I have my gear turned to about 7 or 8 degrees, which in reality is only about 2 or 3 degrees of advance.

Also, the Zex street cam is great, I highly recommend it.

Is that the 5100 or the 5300 (the 5300 is the stree/strip cam)?

Are you running upgraded springs/retainers?

do you mean 59100 and 59300??

i am putting in a 59300 from a z6 with a cam gear as soon as it comes in the mail. and no, no retainers and springs for now. i like breaking things!! but there are a lot of people out there with that cam and no springs or retainers.. i plan on doing it but in a few weeks..

Just out of curiosity, why would you do that? Why not just buy the Y8 cam (the ZEX 105100 or 105300)? Is it not out yet? Does it not make as much power?

The 105300 has the exact same lobe specs as the 59300; the only difference is ... you got it! ... it's made for the Y8 specifically. I was originally going to get a 105300, but I couldn't find any place that sold one. If you visit ZEX's webpage, you can order a Y8 cam, but they don't even tell you which one you'll get. So I'm assuming it's not out yet. Do a search on Google, and you'll have a hard time finding a store that sells the 105300.

What I'd like to know is this, for people running either cam in either head - how do the idle and fuel consumption compare to before you dropped the cam in?

I'm running the Skunk2 Stage 1 in my Y8. The specs are supposed to be similar to the 59300, but I haven't seen any hard proof. Anyway, the engine idles like stock (just more valve and induction noise) and fuel wise? Well, I've driven 216 miles and still have about half a tank left.

Are you serious? Here's how many miles I can drive before filling up around 8.5-9 gallons:

stock----300 miles (~30-32 mpg)
GReddy turbo kit w/ blue box----260 miles (~26-27 mpg)
GReddy turbo kit w/ AFC hack----260 miles (")
I, H, pulley kit----300 miles (~30-32 mpg)
I, H, pulley kit, cam----probably same as above

What kind of mileage do you get? I always calculate it on my phone's calculator after filling up just to see how I'm doing.

I definitely feel it was worth the money. The engine pulls noticeably harder than before ... not as good as when I was boosted but it pulls pretty damn hard for a little SOHC.

The "lag" from idle to 3000 rpm is kind of annoying because it makes quick take-offs difficult, but if I keep my foot planted, there's a nice power surge from 3000 to 5000 rpm. At this point, the powerband dips down a little and then picks back up once VTEC kicks in. At $400, it's not radically expensive, either.

I still run the stock exhaust, so I figured I could get a custom $350 cat-back made that will do little or get a $400 cam that does a lot. Easy choice! I have an appointment for dyno tuning next Friday, so I'm sure my tuner will cure all the dips in the powerband and help the engine use the cam to its max potential.
