Default d series cam. opinions

i searched on this topic before with no luck so here i am. so i am looking into buying a new cam for my d16z6 and i was wondering which is best of these three, crane, crower, or skunk2? and where can i buy these, i can't find a good site anywhere! and is $175 a good price for a shop to install and time it? i don't think i could handle it personally. thanks

I have ZEX cam, the street/strip one, I think it's 59300 or something. Anyway, it's a pretty good cam. I haven';t put on my gear yet, so my powerband isnt where I want it, but in the low and mid range, the power has deffinately improved. My powerband tends to level off after 5500 though, so I'll need to tune it to my liking. The response is great, the sound is MUCH louder, and the low end torque is WAY better. I think 175 would be too much for the install, unless you have them put in a new timing belt and H20 pump at the same time. You figure 65 bucks/hour, and the cam install take around 1 1/2 to 2 hours. So, have them do the little extras, plus they'll need to adjust your valves, etc. I would look into the Skunk 2 cams they have coming out.

I have a JG303 cam in my D16 and it makes a lot of power from 4500 up to redline. There was a drop in low end horsepower but not by much. The idle is smooth accept for a little hicup every now and then but it's tolerable.

after you get your cam.. there is so many options to do after. We should be carrying the SKUNK sohc line as well as the Edelbrock manifold. and the new BISIMOTO header. with these bolt ons and the block work that can be done.. you'llhave a sick sohc setup.

gude, JG, ZEX are all good cams, whatever you do, DON'T BUY A CRANE CAM!!!! it will fall apart on you. and as far as gears go, i would go with a skunk gear, don't do an aem, due to the fact that the screws are known to back themselves out and the gear will adjust on ya

my originol price quote is from ASP in glenwood springs, but i called up cruise control in Rifle(on the way to grand junction), and they said that would cost about $130 or less, so i would use them. i have ordered the cam and i am now contemplating doing it myself, it'll be good for me. i should get the cam hopefully by this weekend and if the schedual keeps up i will attempt it on sunday.

goldeneagle has a nice line of d-series components coming out. one of which is a cam gear. believe that they also have an intake manifold on its way. http://www.goldeneaglemfg.com

Make sure you know what you're doing before you attempt it. remember: torque to specs, and allign timing belt and check 3 times.

Crane had a bad batch of DOHC cams, not SOHC cams. Not that ive heard of anyway.

Good luck on your project.
