CX tranny?
I'll be boosting in about 2 weeks once I get my BOV and piping for my downpipe. And right now I in need of a throwout bearing but being up in WI not too many places (autozone, checker....) don't keep these in stock and need to special order these (3-5 days shipping)and I need my car back on the road before then for work. A local guy has a CX tranny and how would that do with a turbo with it having long gears over my y8 tranny? I need something ASAP. I was just wondering since people usually like tranny's with longer gearing for FI over something that has shorter gear ratios like the z6 and y8 trannies?

Re: CX tranny? (egizzle6)
The CX (96-00) Has the D16Y7 tranny. I got one, and the gearing is lower than a EX. Many will tell you, and I can attest, the Y7 is a kind of weak tranny. The synchros aren't too great, they just aren't as beefy as a B series. I advise a Y8 tranny over a Y7, but go to http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com . I've ordered many parts from them, there reliable, and ship pretty quick. Go check them now.

Any CX tranny is shit, don't buy it.

Re: CX tranny? (BauleyCivic)
w3rd
dont even bother you will hate that long ass tranny you can cruz on the hwy at like 65 in 3rd gear |
Re: CX tranny? (H22A EG6)
Even with it boosted? Wouldn't I get the most out of my turbo before I have to shift with a longer geared tranny?
|
the tranny you have right now is the best you can go with. CX tranny=slow, EX tranny=fast
|
Re: (2FAST4U831)
stay with the EX tranny. CX tranny gears are so longg
|
Re: (jdm98hb)
Yeah but don't you want a longer geared tranny for FI setup and shorter for NA setups? You don't wanna shift before the turbo is just starting to spool up and not reach full boost. Isn't this the reason why people use the LS tranny for turbo setups instead of the vtec tranny's? http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Re: (egizzle6)
I wonder about this too. I think its a good idea
if its cheap for you. Unless it really does have crappy components that cant handle the abuse, but I find that hard to belive. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif |
get an ex tranny, that'll let you boost enough and wont let ur rpms drop
|
I would say that the shorter the better because it spools faster https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

CX trannys are ridiculous https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

Re: CX tranny? (japspecjohn)
The CX transmission is the best! I have one with 87,000 miles on it...do you want to buy it for $300.00?
|
Re: CX tranny? (japspecjohn)
egizzle, i used to have the same thoughts about getting a longer tranny for FI, but then i kinda got swayed back the other way somehow (probably from this evil forum). i know nothing of the difference between the y7 and y8 trannies as far as longevity goes, but i think you've got the right idea though!
i say grab the cx tranny if they arent much worse for logevity purposes cuz i honestly do think that itd be faster (if all else were held constant) than the y8 tranny. shit, you could always go back with hardly any more money lost, couldnt ya? |
Re: CX tranny? (EK22snatch)
Well I got the cx tranny for 20. I just used the throwout bearing and release fork from the CX and went right onto the y8 tranny. Only thing is that I used the 6 puck pressure plate since the disk is what caused the throwout bearing to go bad and put a stock y7 disk back in and it's chattering my fillings loose! Will this eventually go away or not. It's no biggie and I'll just pick up a NEW clutch sometime soon and use this one till then. "On the road again!" Note to self do not ever buy a used clutch. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif Maybe when I get the new clutch I'll experiment with the CX tranny but for now stick with my y8 and chattering hybrid clutch.

Re: CX tranny? (egizzle6)
listen...an EX transmission is longer than an LS transmission...the CX is 10x longer than the EX
A shorter geared transmission is better than a long geared one in ANY application |

Its more of a balance for your application. I think honda put such long gears in CX because it would be a shame for someone to spend all that extra money on an EX and cant beat a CX by alot. Well thats just my .02 |

the only reason for having a longer geared transmission is if you put the pedal down in 4th and smoke tires, then you just save time from between shifts if you have a longer gears...but not may people are confronted with this situation and the more favorable solution is better tires |

alright, i believe you and all, but is there a way you could explain it to me that makes sense?</TD></TR></TABLE> Sure. With shorter gears, the engine accelerates and goes through the RPM's faster, allowing you to get to the peak of the powerband (max HP) faster, therefore accelerating the car faster. A close ratio transmission allows you to shift gears and still stay in the powerband. Short gears and close gears are two different things, but with most honda transmissions the shorter the gears, the closer the gears. Basically, you want to arrive at the peak of the powerband faster and stay there when you shift gears, which is what a shorter geared transmission allows you to do. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cruzan007 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"> I think honda put such long gears in CX because it would be a shame for someone to spend all that extra money on an EX and cant beat a CX by alot.
