Default CV Shaft alignment on 97 LX?

I just did a full R&R of the trans on my 97 LX to install a new clutch and input shaft bearings. Everything was a piece of cake but I installed the CV shafts with the old retainer rings (which I realize now is a no-no). The shafts popped out within about 30 seconds on test drive. I have the shafts back out and am about to reassemble with new retaining clips but I'm concerned about alignment of the CV to the DIF in the trans? is there a keyway or anything I need to worry about or do I just put it back in? Also any way to ensure that I have it all the way in?
