CV boot ripped...Can I drive to work? Need answer...
Hi guys, my 93' Civic Si's passenger side CV boot is ripped right in half. I noticed a bit of a clunk this morning while I was making a turn and when I went to look behind the wheel when I got home, I saw the ripped boot.
I have to work for the next 3 days for 12 hour shifts, 40km from my house. I really need the hours, so I need to know if my car will be okay to drive until Monday when I'm off for a couple days and can get a rebuilt halfshaft put in, or will I be the cause of a horrific accident on the highway?
I'm supposed to be leaving for work in an hour and half from now...what do you guys think?

If you're paranoid, and the boot isn't missing any pieces, you can pull the tear together and tape them together with small pieces of duct tape. It's a complete jury rig and you should replace the boot ASAP but it would get you through a few days.
If part of the boot has been ripped off, so theres a gaping hole, then that's out.
If it's only a couple days, and you currently don't have any CV problems, then it should survive a couple days of exposure. CV joints rarely have spectacular and unexpected failures, they normally get increasingly worn, which causes they to make increasing amounts of noise. Unless it goes from quiet to wailing (well clicking) banshee over the next few days I wouldn't worry about it.

Agreed with all previous posts and if you're missing a HUGE part of the boot and can't do the tape method, go to a local auto store and get the "split boots" They're a PIA to get the itty bitty screws and nuts in them since they have to go on once they're wrapped around the axle but squeeze an assload of CV joint grease in there and seal 'em up adn you can probably get a couple months out of them.

A clunk usually represents a balljoint, not a CV. A click usually represents a CV. Just make sure you replace it.

Long ago, a few years removed from my current wisdom, I drove on some cv's that were worn well beyond the point of clicking. The car still worked fine.
I also learned that this is a pretty easy repair though. Go grab a whole new axle (reasonably cheap from autozone or whatever, and much easier than re-packing a cv joint) and take a day and do it yourself.
